ROUNDUP: BAZE STRETCHES ADVANTAGE.Byline: Fred J. Robledo Staff Writer POMONA - Tyler Baze Tyler Baze (born October 19, 1982 in Seattle, Washington) is an American Champion jockey. Born into a racing family, both of his parents were jockeys as is his uncle, Gary Baze. His second cousin is U.S. Racing Hall of Fame jockey, Russell Baze. doesn't look old enough to drive a car, but he knows how to handle thoroughbreds in traffic. The smiling 17-year-old extended his riding lead over jockey Martin Pedroza at Fairplex, shifting gears down the stretch aboard Warren's Whistle to capture the $50,000 Black Swan Stakes for 2-year-old fillies over the 1 1/16-mile course Tuesday. It was Baze's second winner of the afternoon. He now has 21 victories at Fairplex, three ahead of Pedroza's 18. ``He's going to be the next California sensation,'' trainer Melvin F. Stute said of Baze. Stute saddled Warren's Whistle. ``Only problem is if he doesn't get too big (in the head). He's a young boy and a fast learner. He catches on so quick. ``The very first day he rode for me here, everyone was knocking at the way he rode. It just took him one day to get the feel of this track and ever since, he's been going.'' Warren's Whistle's had to chase down the favorite, Madame Roar, which had a clean trip for Pedroza. Warren's Whistle looked liked she would run into traffic, but the rail opened up and she sped right through. ``It took some maneuvering, but we got her around there,'' Baze said. ``I watched her (Madame Roar); she was getting tired and they (the field) were really going slow at the end. I guess she (Warren's Whistle) just had more in the tank.'' Stute didn't know if she would get through, but he had his fingers crossed. ``This wasn't a sterling field that she beat,'' he said. ``But she's getting better.
