Byline: Jerry Antonucci Special to the Daily News

Trainer Bobby Frankel didn't get into the Hall of Fame by losing the big ones.

Frankel completed his dream weekend Sunday when Aldebaran rallied five wide into the stretch to win the $200,000 San Carlos Handicap The San Carlos Handicap is a Grade II stakes race for Thoroughbred horses run at California's Santa Anita Park each year. Late-running Grey Memo came from last Sunday in the six-horse field to finish third as the seven furlong race, Santa Anita's only Grade I sprint stakes for older horses, was timed in 1:21 2/5.

In the middle of the turn for home, jockey Jose Valdivia had Aldebaran on the move, and the rider's only decision nearing the top of the stretch was to go around, or between, his rivals.

``I never was worried he was going to get beat,'' Valdivia said. ``I worked him the past three weeks and he got better and better. As soon as I took him outside, he took off.''

While Aldebaran went outside, Crafty C. T. was stuck on the rail throughout.

``I think his best races are when he is allowed to sit off the pace a couple of lengths and run from behind,''' said jockey Patrick Valenzuela, who won four races on the card. ``I thought he had given up, but he showed a ton of heart to stay up for second.''
