The orphanage is one of the largest in Guadalajara, Mexico. When police find an abandoned or abused child, they often bring him to Casa Hogar Nacidos para Triunfar because they know he will be treated well there, Durban said. However, there are so many children brought to the orphanage that some have to be turned away because of a lack of space, he added. With the larger facility, more children will be able to find a safe place to live. Durban went to Mexico to personally present the donation to the orphanage's director, Veronica Tejeda, whose husband and two children are also full-time residents of the facility and the sole staff. Because of the small staff, many of the older orphans help with the younger ones, Durban said. In selecting the orphanage for financial aid, the local club worked closely with the Rotary Club of Zapopan, near Guadalajara, and its past president, Daniel Herrera. Several on-site visits were made before funding was approved, Durban said. Since its founding in 1959, the Northridge/Chatsworth Rotary Club has been involved in projects all over the world, including India, Africa, Ecuador and Romania. In Africa, the club helped pay for a generator generator, in electricity, machine used to change mechanical energy into electrical energy. It operates on the principle of electromagnetic induction, discovered (1831) by Michael Faraday. , Durban said. In Romania, it paid for a nurse to visit an orphanage to provide additional training to the nurses who cared for the orphans. In addition to general fundraisers the Rotary club holds throughout the year, Durban recently started a video library, where Northridge/Chatsworth Rotarians can purchase a $5 membership and rent videos. Funds from the library go to further help the orphanage in Guadalajara. The Northridge/Chatworth Rotary Club meets at noon on Tuesdays at Porter Valley Country Club, 19216 Singing Hills Drive, Northridge.
