Connoisseurs and folks who just want a taste of the good life will get a chance to indulge at the 13th annual Ventura County Gourmet Food and Wine Festival on Sunday evening.

More than 65 purveyors of food and wine plan to display their wares on 114 tables, covering the entire first floor of The Oaks mall. Restaurateurs, vintners and merchants will offer samples and information on products and service, as well as items for sale.

The festival represents an advertising opportunity for food and wine merchants, a way to reach out to prospective clientele away from their usual places of business.

``We do a lot of business at lunchtime,'' said Aldo Caporaso, co-owner of D&R Deli. ``This may be a good way to get more business on the catering side.'' ``This is a win-win situation for three groups,'' Dransfeldt said.

Visitors will be offered a 32-page dining guide, free wine glass, coupons and a plethora of wine and food facts to take home.

It's more than advertising, says Kay Corning of Kay's Gourmet Catering in Westlake Village.

``I like checking out my competition to see what everyone else is doing,'' she said. Corning also likes to contribute to the community. ``The benefits are so important, especially for senior citizens. I feel it's well worth my investment.''

The Westlake-based caterer has been a mainstay of the event for years. Because of her popularity at the festival and the crowds she draws, her five tables are strategically located away from the main path of travel. ``I put out the most food of any of them,'' said Corning, who will serve barbecued ribs, Swedish meatballs Noun 1. Among those volunteering at the festival will be a dozen members of the Conejo Valley Amateur Radio Club, including Don Weinberg. He has worked with event organizers for five of the 13 annual events.

``I joined the Rotary Club myself this year, partially because this event is so successful,'' Weinberg said.

Radio club members provide logistical backup and act as liaisons among mall authorities, public agencies and exhibitors. The Oaks is divided into a dozen zones. An operator in each zone relays information and helps discourage emergencies or problems.

``This is good training for ham operators in a controlled setting,'' Weinberg said.

Logistical considerations are important to Tim Coles, owner of Conejo Wine & Provision in Thousand Oaks.

``One year, there were waiters and waitresses singing in a microphone next to my booth all night,'' Coles said. ``I think there were even Elvis impersonators. It was OK - for a while.''
