ROSS STORES REPORTS AUGUST SALES
ROSS STORES REPORTS AUGUST SALES NEWARK, Calif., Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Ross Stores Inc.
(NASDAQ: ROST) today reported sales of $89 million for the four-week period ended Aug. 29, 1992, a 3 percent increase above the $86 million in sales for the four weeks ended Aug. 31, 1991. Comparable store sales declined 6 percent from the same period last year.
For the seven months through Aug. 29, 1992, sales were $565 million, a 9 percent increase above the $517 million in sales for the prior year's comparable period ended Aug. 31, 1991. For the seven months, same store sales were even with the prior year. In commenting on these sales results, Norman A. Ferber, president and chief executive officer, stated, "We had expected same store sales during August to be down from 1991, due mainly to a late Labor Day this year. Sales for the month were somewhat less than expected due to weakness in our Children's business. However, we believe that September sales should benefit from both the later holiday and an above-average year-to-date sales trend in our Men's and Misses departments, which are the most important businesses during September and the balance of the year." Ross Stores Inc. operates a national chain of off-price retail stores offering first quality, in-season, branded apparel and apparel- related merchandise for the entire family. The company had 221 stores in operation at Aug. 29, 1992, compared to 197 stores at the end of the same period last year. -0- 9/3/92 /CONTACT: Earl T.
