``He was always happy and funny and tried to help whenever he could,'' said Lisa Monsauer, the mother of a friend of Morris. ``What sticks out the most in my mind was his smile. God, what a warm, friendly smile. He could have done anything he wanted.''

A new rose bush was planted for Morris.

Many teen-agers and others wore T-shirts with a photo of Morris on the front and his football jersey number, 4, on the back. They wrote messages to him on red, white and blue balloons, then released them into the sky.

``We're releasing the balloons hoping he'll get our messages,'' said Highland student Morris Shannell Santelmann, 17. ``This entire school is like a reminder every day of him. It's so hard to come here.''

Junior ROTC students lowered the school flag to half-staff for the ceremony while others watched and cried.

Morris' mother, Donna O'Leary, said she was touched by the outpouring of sympathy from the school and the community since the killing.

``It's so sweet seeing that my son touched so many lives like this,'' O'Leary said. ``We knew he was a wonderful person, but this is just incredible.''
