ROSE BOWL RECEIVERS: EDWARDS GETS NUMBER CALLED MICHIGAN RECEIVER LIVES UP TO BILLING.

Byline: Joe Haakenson Staff Writer

PASADENA - There was something about that Michigan jersey with the No. 1 on it that drew a crowd Saturday afternoon in the Rose Bowl.

Braylon Edwards Braylon Jamel Edwards (born on February 21, 1983 in Detroit, Michigan) is an American football wide receiver for the Cleveland Browns of the NFL. His father, Stan Edwards, played football at the University of Michigan (1977-1981) and with the Houston Oilers (1982-1986) and Detroit , the Wolverines' all-everything receiver, lived up to his lofty reputation despite a 38-37 loss to Texas. And when Edwards reluctantly left the field and made his way to the Michigan locker room, that No. 1 jersey had quite an effect on him.

``For a minute, I couldn't take it off,'' the 6-foot-3, 208-pound receiver said. ``My uniform stuck to me. It was tough for me. I'll never be able to wear the Maize maize: see corn.  and Blue again.''

But not many have worn it the way he did.

Edwards set a Rose Bowl record with three touchdown catches Saturday, and made 10 catches overall for 109 yards. Including his 10 catches in last year's Rose Bowl against USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. , Edwards has 20 career Rose Bowl receptions, shattering the previous mark of 14 held by UCLA's J.J. Stokes Stokes , William 1804-1878.

 (1994).

``We have so many weapons you can't focus on me,'' Edwards said. ``They focused on me early on and Steve (Breaston) had a 50-yard touchdown. They put two guys on me, which is pretty standard.

``I just knew I had to make plays. Breaston and I talk constantly all game, and we talk with (quarterback Chad Henne Chad Steven Henne (born July 2, 1985 in West Lawn, Pennsylvania) is an American football quarterback who plays for the Michigan Wolverines. He graduated from Wilson Senior High School, setting school records for passing yards and touchdowns. ). When we were up 31-21, we did not let down. We still felt a sense of urgency to score.''

Edwards finished his collegiate career as Michigan's all-time leader in touchdown catches with 39, passing the record of 38 held by Anthony Carter For the former Michigan Wolverines player, see Anthony Carter (American football).

and setting a Big Ten record as well. His 97 catches for 1,330 yards this season are Michigan single-season records.

Edwards was the Biletnikoff Award winner, and was named first team All-America by virtually every outlet that makes such picks. He was 10th in the Heisman Trophy Heisman Trophy

``I think he's had an All-America year, no question he deserves all the awards he won,'' Carr said. ``He was great on the field and a great leader on our team. Another thing I'm very proud of, and I had nothing to do with it, is that he's a great person off the field.''
