ROSE BOWL NOTEBOOK: MANGUM FORCED TO WAIT FOR KICK.

Byline: Walter Hammerwold Staff Writer

PASADENA - Two timeouts gave Texas kicker Dusty Mangum Dustin Ross Mangum is a former placekicker for the University of Texas at Austin's college football team (The Texas Longhorns) from 2001 to 2004. Mangum, who began his college football career as a walk-on, is best known for capping UT's 2004-2005 season with a 37-yard game-winning  plenty of time to think as he prepared for the biggest kick of his career, a 37-yarder as time expired Saturday to give Texas a 38-37 Rose Bowl victory over Michigan.

The senior, a walk-on four years ago, said he spent one timeout singing the Hoobastank song ``Just One'' in his head and the other reliving his favorite moments of his college career.

The biggest career moment might be a memory only if Mangum sees a replay. The kicker said his mind went blank during the play.

``I just remember flashes here and there,'' Mangum said. ``I turned to the sideline, all my teammates were cheering, then the confetti came pouring down. It's really the best feeling of my life.''

Mangum has been a kicker since eighth grade. He said his parents wouldn't allow him in high school to play receiver, the position he coveted cov·et

--Bad Benson: Texas running back Cedric Benson's performance Saturday was his worst of the season.

``I didn't do it on the ground, but we did it on someone else's legs,'' he said. ``We won, and that's all anyone's going to remember.''

Michigan's front seven loaded up the middle of the field and gave Benson few holes to run through. The focus the Wolverines paid to Benson allowed Young to run free on scrambles, delays and near the sidelines.

``They stabbed themselves in the foot trying to stop the run, and Vince exploited it with his passing or his running,'' Benson said. ``I knew he'd do this, too. Any time a team sets out to stop me, he makes them pay.''

``It only hurt for a moment,'' said Benson, who limped off the field with trainers at his side. ``I was just a little too excited. My eyes saw something happening, and my eyes started moving before my body was set.''

``You're going to be disappointed when you lose,'' Woodley said. ``You look back at mistakes that you know you shouldn't have had, and that's disappointing. I am just mad because I wasn't able to send the seniors out on a good note.''
