Pasadena officials said the project - approved Monday night in the form of a $21.5 million bond issue - will help the Rose Bowl hang onto its major tenants, the UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University) UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX football team and the Galaxy professional soccer team. Also, officials hope they have strengthened their bids to host the 1999 or 2000 Super Bowl and serve as a ``transition stadium'' for an NFL NFL abbr. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, home. The stadium has hosted five Super Bowls, 1984 Olympic soccer and the 1994 World Cup final, as well as the annual Rose Bowl college-football game. But comfort has not been one of the attractions of the 73-year-old bowl. Just 22,000 seats have backs. The only major renovation in recent years consisted of $11 million in press box improvements and luxury suite construction in 1992. UCLA's lease runs out at the end of the next football season. An athletic department spokesman said negotiations are ongoing. Pasadena assistant city manager Ed Sotelo said an agreement appears close. The Galaxy, one of the success stories of Major League Soccer's inaugural season, has a contract to play in the Rose Bowl for two years and holds options on each of the next three years. But Galaxy president and general manager Danny Villanueva Daniel Dario Villanueva (born November 5, 1937 in Tucumcari, New Mexico) was an American football placekicker and punter in the National Football League for the Los Angeles Rams and the Dallas Cowboys. said team management is ``very happy with the Rose Bowl'' and supports the renovation plan. ``It really is a great place to play,'' Villanueva said. ``To have installed extra concession stands and restroom facilities for the comfort of our fans is something we welcome. Adding a video screen will make it a more entertaining place to watch soccer.'' Villanueva said the promise of improvements was implied, though not spelled out, in the team's Rose Bowl contract. The project will include the upgrading of 17 restrooms to conform with the American Disabilities Act. Installation of an elevator offering field-level access will begin this month. Major construction is scheduled to start in late June and cost $21.5 million. Existing Rose Bowl and public golf-course revenue will be used to make up for the $2.5 million in bond revenue that will be eaten up by financing costs. The plan was approved by a 6-1 vote. |
