ROSE: THORN TO MONROE : N. HOLLYWOOD TRANSFER PROVES HE'S 2-WAY STAR N. HOLLYWOOD 30, MONROE 6.

Byline: Gary Washburn Daily News Staff Writer

For Devon Rose, winning sure feels good again.

The North Hollywood High school North Hollywood High School, originally called Lankershim High School when it opened in 1927, is a secondary school in North Hollywood in Los Angeles, California. The school mascot is the husky, and the school colors are blue, white, grey.  linebacker, who suffered through an 0-10 season at Granada Hills just last year, was the key in the Huskies' 30-6 Valley Pac-8 Conference win over No. 9 Monroe.

Rose scored two touchdowns, including a 43-yard fumble return in the fourth quarter that iced the upset for the visiting Huskies.

Dante Clay, Rose benefited with 61 yards on seven carries as a fullback and had two fumble recoveries at linebacker, including his touchdown when he ran away from the entire Monroe squad.

``I'm having fun again,'' Rose said. ``It was tough last year. It's good to be winning. This was a big win.''

The Huskies (3-2, 2-0) knocked Monroe from the ranks of the undefeated with a defense that bent but never broke. Monroe helped with five fumbles and an interception.

At a crucial point, with the Vikings behind just 14-6 in the fourth quarter, coach Don Senegal elected to go on fourth-down-and 5 from the Monroe 25. Tailback Paul Jones Paul Jones can refer to:

On the next play, David Harlow motored 26 yards and North Hollywood had a 22-6 cushion. Monroe did not have the services of starting tailback Vinny Walker, who sprained an ankle in the third quarter after picking up 104 yards.

``That was big because he's a good runner,'' North Hollywood coach Gary Gray said. ``Our defense hasn't been too good lately and we played well tonight.''

Monroe quarterback Willie Alaimo was 2 for 12 for just 20 yards, meaning the Vikings had to rely on the run. In Monroe's misdirection MISDIRECTION, practice. An error made by a judge in charging the jury in a special case.

The Huskies, expected to challenge Sylmar for the Valley Pac-8 title until they lost their final two nonconference games, got over a big hurdle in their quest to make that Sylmar game (Oct. 25) for the title.

``Everybody knows the road to the championship is through Monroe and Sylmar,'' Gray said. ``And we got through one of them. That makes the Sylmar game a big one.''

Rose tranferred to North Hollywood under open enrollment over the summer to play on a winning team. He was immediately inserted at linebacker and fullback. Gray used quick hitters to gain chunks of yardage yard·age 1

Clay finished with 111 yard on 14 carries, but the remainder of the rushers had 144 yards in 29 carries.

What was supposed to be a battle of power-running teams turned into a mistake-filled first half filled with fumbles.

Erik Talamantes picked off Alaimo's first pass to set up the Huskies at their own 40. Harlow fumbled back to the Vikings inside the Monroe 20.

But Harlow received a reprieve reprieve (rĭprēv`): in law, see pardon.  when Alaimo committed the first of three first-half fumbles and North Hollywood cashed it in with a Rose 14-yard touchdown run four minutes into the game. Clay's 2-point conversion put North Hollywood ahead 8-0.

Neither offense got started because both were too busy making turnovers. Alaimo fumbled three times in the first half and threw an interception. The Huskies matched that with three fumbles.

Monroe was able to drive 70 yards in nine plays, helped by a Vinny Walker 24-yard run to the 6. Alaimo's 2-yard run made it 8-6.

Clay finished with 65 yards at halftime in just eight carries. He had runs of 34 and 13 yards but wasn't able to produce because the Huskies had the ball just 21 plays in the first half.
