ROOT FOCUSES ON SENIOR NEEDS.

Byline: BETTIE RENCORET

LANCASTER - Seniors' concerns have long been uppermost in the mind of George Lee Several people share the name George Lee:
  • Sir George Lee (English politician) (1700–1758), English politician, Privy Counsellor, MP for Brackley 1733-1742, for Devizes 1742–1747, for Liskeard 1747-1754, and for Launceston 1754-1758

for change in a society where he believes the value of age and experience is threatened. He feels it is necessary to stay constantly vigilant in order to protect the quality of life for most seniors.

As vice president of the Antelope Valley Committee on Aging, Root stumps for the acquisition of private funds for the group. These are needed, he notes, to augment diminishing county subsidization of services available at the three Antelope Valley senior centers.

``There are so many things we need to adequately supply our aging citizens that the list is endless,'' he said. ``Mainly, we have to have vans to transport meals to the homebound home·bound

Such programs are usually conducted by governmental or charitable organizations.  program was in jeopardy for a time but through the efforts of many, he pointed out, it has been improved in the last couple of years.

``For quite a while we had over a hundred names on a waiting list for delivery of a hot midday meal,'' he said. ``That has now been reduced to about 85. Even one on that list is too many so we keep hammering away at getting those donations.''

The committee helps seniors with individual problems, as well.

``There are a lot of people out there fighting for their independence but who don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

While stationed in Virginia, he married the former Barbara Monahan. They have three grown children, Teri Hamby, Garry and Jeff, all of Lancaster, and five grandchildren.

He feels two diverse groups - seniors and youth - are the ones which need the most attention from society.

During his City Council term, Lancaster's teen court was established for the purpose of removing the first-time, minor offenders from the judicial system.

As a mobile-home owner, Root was a supporter of rent control - the issue that got him started in local politics.

``People in the parks had a lot of trouble with those rent hikes,'' he said.

Root retired in 1992, after 35 years, from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory facility at Edwards Air Force Base Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. Will he run for office again?

``I've been asked to and I'm thinking about it,'' he said. ``I may run on the next ticket. Who knows?''
