RON SOMMER APPOINTED PRESIDENT OF SONY EUROPE

 PARK RIDGE, N.J., Feb. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Corporation of America President Ron Sommer will join Sony Europe as president and chief operating officer, effective April 1, 1993, it was announced today by Ken Iwaki, executive deputy president, Sony Corporation (NYSE: SNE) and chairman, Sony Corporation of America.
 Sony Corporation of America is the $5 billion subsidiary responsible for the sales and marketing of Sony electronics products in the United States. Mr. Sommer had served as president and COO since 1990. Mr. Iwaki will assume the role of acting president.
 "During Mr. Sommer's tenure, Sony has maintained a rate of sales growth in the United States far exceeding that of the electronics industry overall, despite a prolonged recession," noted Mr. Iwaki. "Mr. Sommer's experience will now be applied to the business opportunities and challenges of an increasingly integrated European Community. This move underscores the importance of Europe as a key world zone for Sony," he added.
 Sony Europe, headquartered in Cologne, Germany, was established in 1986 to oversee Sony's sales, marketing and manufacturing subsidiaries in Europe. The heads of these sales and marketing companies will report directly to Mr. Sommer.
 Mr. Sommer was born in 1949 in Israel, and was raised in Austria. He earned his doctorate in mathematics from the University of Vienna in 1971, and joined Nixdorf Computer in the United States in 1973. He transferred to Nixdorf Computer AG in Germany in 1974, and was named head of the company's largest subsidiary in France in 1977. He joined Sony in 1980 to start its nonconsumer business at Sony Germany, and was named president of that company in 1986. He is fluent in English, French, and German. His interests include family, skiing and art. He is married and has two children.
