ROMER DEFENDS LAUSD DISTRICT'S SIZE HAS HELPED BUILD SCHOOLS, CHIEF SAYS.

Byline: Jennifer Radcliffe Staff Writer

STUDIO CITY - Superintendent Roy Romer Roy R. Romer (born October 31, 1928 in Garden City, Kansas, United States) was the 39th governor of Colorado and served as the superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District from 2001 to 2006.  urged about 125 San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

LAUSD's size - 720,000 children and 700 square miles - is a key reason it has been able to build so many schools so quickly, Romer told members of the Economic Alliance of the San Fernando Valley at an early morning ``conversation with the community'' at the Sportsmen's Lodge The Sportsmen's Lodge in the San Fernando Valley section of Los Angeles, California is something of a kitsch landmark but remains a popular spot for celebrations, dinners and public events. .

``We wouldn't be able to do it if we didn't have the size we did,'' he said. ``Right now, this is the right size.''

Offering an abbreviated version of the ``State of the District'' address he gave earlier this week, Romer lauded the progress LAUSD LAUSD Los Angeles Unified School District (Los Angeles, CA)  has made building schools and increasing elementary students' academic performance during his five-year tenure.

Through $14 billion in bond money, LAUSD is adding more than 160,000 classroom seats over the next seven years and plans to ask voters to approve a $3.8 billion bond in November to allow it to finish its bid to relieve overcrowding overcrowding

Romer asked leaders to give LAUSD credit for its gains.

``I honestly believe this community doesn't realize the progress that's been made in this district,'' he said. ``At the same time, you can't look at the test scores and be satisfied.''

parent Brian Rawlings said that, while he's glad Romer spoke to the Valley, the superintendent didn't address the area's specific needs.

``The questions are simple, and the answers are unclear,'' he said. While Valley schools aren't as poor as some Los Angeles campuses, they need more resources, he said. Schools need funding for teachers' aides and enrichment programs, Rawlings said.

``We're stuck in the middle of a tough spot,'' he said.

Rawlings said Romer's focus on his plan to build new schools doesn't resonate with some West Valley families.

``We don't care - we have a great building,'' Rawlings said, ``but I want him to keep coming back so we can keep asking and keep asking.''
