ROMANTIC COMEDY BRIDGES CULTURE GAP.

Byline: Angela Randazzo Daily News Staff Writer

Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  - The clash between two sophisticated New Yorkers and the Amish residents of Bird-In-Hand, Pa., comes to the fore in the romantic comedy ``Plain and Fancy,'' opening tonight at the Cultural Arts Center.

``The characters learn to appreciate each other's cultures,'' said Jan Glasband, the show's director. ``They find a way to bridge the differences and that makes everyone a better human being.''

The music by Tony Award winner Albert Hague has a folksy folk·sy

``The music is very good and challenging and we got to meet the composer Meet the Composer is an American organization founded in 1974 by the composer John Duffy as a project of the New York State Council on the Arts. It seeks to assist composers in making a living through writing music by sponsoring commissioning, residency, education, and audience ,'' Bull said.

For the young performers, meeting Hague - a veteran Broadway composer, teacher, lecturer, coach and performer - was one of the highlights of the production. Hague felt the same way about meeting the cast.

``I dropped in at one of the rehearsals,'' Hague said. ``The kids were wonderful. I'm very pleased. They're doing a great job.''

Hague may be best-remembered for playing the shrewd and wily Professor Shorofsky in the movie and television productions of ``Fame.'' However, his pursuit of the arts began with the study of classical music in his native Berlin and at the Royal Conservatory conservatory

``Plain and Fancy'' opened on Broadway in 1955 to rave reviews and continues to delight audience in revivals. In 1958, Hague was back on Broadway again as the composer for ``Redhead,'' which won him a Tony Award for best score. Hague also composed the songs for the television version of the Dr. Suess classic ``How the Grinch Stole Christmas.''

``Plain and Fancy'' marks the ninth production of the ARTS Youth Ensemble at the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center.
