ROHM AND HAAS TO INCREASE ACRYLIC ACID CAPACITY

ROHM AND HAAS TO INCREASE ACRYLIC ACID CAPACITY
PHILADELPHIA, June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Rohm and Haas Company

(NYSE: ROH) announced today it will spend more than $100 million to expand its acrylic acid facility in Houston, Texas.
The 200-million-pound addition will increase the company's total capacity from 600 to 800 million pounds per year.
William H. Staas, business unit director for Monomers, explained that both internal and external demand for acrylic acid and its esters is behind the expansion. "We require additional monomer capacity to match the growth of our polymer businesses, and to meet increasing demand from the merchant market."
Construction will begin during the first half of 1994, with completion expected late in 1995.
Upon completion of the expansion, the Houston site will be the single largest acrylic acid facility in the world. Acrylic acid monomer and its derivatives are used to make paints, coatings, detergent additives, water-treatment chemicals, adhesives, floor polishes, paper coatings, textile chemicals and superabsorbent materials.
