ROGER SANT NAMED TO BOARD OF MARRIOTT INTERNATIONAL

 WASHINGTON, Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Marriott International, Inc. (NYSE: MAR), today announced that Roger W. Sant has been appointed to its board of directors and that Alice S. Marriott has been named director emeritus.
 Sant is chairman of the board and chief executive officer of the AES Corporation, which he co-founded in 1981. Headquartered in the Washington area, AES is one of the world's largest independent power producers with ownership interest in eight plants.
 Marriott, who was a co-founder of Marriott Corporation with her late husband J. Willard Marriott, has served continuously on its board since the company was incorporated in 1929. This is believed to be one of the longest periods of active board service in American business history.
 The stock of Marriott International, Inc., was distributed to shareholders of Marriott Corporation effective Oct. 8, 1993. At the same time, Marriott Corporation was renamed Host Marriott Corporation (NYSE: HMT).
 Other members of Marriott International's board of directors are: J.W. Marriott Jr., chairman and president, Marriott International; Sterling D. Colton, vice chairman and senior vice president, Marriott International; Gilbert M. Grosvenor, president and chairman, the National Geographic Society; Floretta Dukes McKenzie, president, The McKenzie Group; Richard E. Marriott, chairman, Host Marriott Corporation; and W. Mitt Romney, chief executive officer, Bain & Company, Inc.
 Prior to founding AES, Sant was director of the Mellon Institute's Energy Productivity Center. He formerly served as a political appointee in the Ford administration and was a key participant in developing the nation's energy policy initiatives. Before entering government service, he was active in the management or founding of several businesses, and taught corporate finance at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.
 Sant holds a master's degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. He is vice chairman of the World Resource Institute, a member of the board of the World Wildlife Fund (U.S.) and a director and former chairman of the Environmental Defense Fund.
 Sant is the author of "The Least-Cost Energy Strategy," a co-author of "Creating Abundance -- America's Least-Cost Energy Strategy" and has written numerous articles and publications on energy conservation.
 Marriott International is involved in various lodging and service management businesses. Headquartered in Washington, it has operations and franchises in 50 states and 24 countries.
