ROCKWELL TO LAY OFF 135 AFTER DISCOVERY PROJECT.

Byline: Jim Skeen Daily News Staff Writer

Rockwell Space Systems Division will lay off approximately 135 workers next month as modifications on space shuttle space shuttle, reusable U.S. space vehicle. Developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), it consists of a winged orbiter, two solid-rocket boosters, and an external tank.  Discovery near completion, officials said Tuesday.

An undetermined number of the laid-off workers will be brought back to work on the orbiter Endeavour, scheduled to arrive in Palmdale for modifications Aug. 9, Rockwell spokesman Alan Buis said.

``Some will be recalled in the September time frame,'' Buis said. ``We expect to have about the same number working on Endeavour as we have on Discovery.''

About 300 of Rockwell's 625 Palmdale employees work on Discovery's modifications. The other employees manufacture space shuttle parts.

Modification work on Discovery will conclude June 24 when the orbiter is rolled out for preparation for its return flight to Florida. Discovery's modifications include the installation of an air lock for docking with the Russian Russian

``Work is winding down, and everything is on schedule,'' Buis said. ``Overall, we have a very clean vehicle.''

Endeavour will be making its first visit to Palmdale since its rollout in April 1991 as the replacement for the ill-fated Challenger. Endeavour will be inspected for wear and modified for international space station missions.

More than 100 modifications will be made. Those will include adding a docking device to fit the international space station and installing lighter thermal protection against re-entry RE-ENTRY, estates. The resuming or retaking possession of land which the party lately had.
