ROCKWELL SPACE SYSTEMS DIVISION HONORED BY NASA ADMINISTRATOR FOR SHUTTLE QUALITY

               ROCKWELL SPACE SYSTEMS DIVISION HONORED
BY NASA ADMINISTRATOR FOR SHUTTLE QUALITY
DOWNEY, Calif., July 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Rockwell International Corp.'s (NYSE: ROK) Space Systems Division (SSD) has received the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA's) first-ever Award for World Class Performance in recognition of its exemplary work in building the new Space Shuttle orbiter Endeavour. The award is given when the NASA administrator determines that an organization has performed world-class work of significant benefit to the agency and taxpayers.
Robert G. Minor, SSD president, accepted the award for Rockwell SSD from NASA Administrator Daniel S. Goldin in Houston.
"The flawless performance of Endeavour's first flight," Goldin said, "was due to the outstanding effort of two contractors, Rockwell and Lockheed. Rockwell's experience building orbiters since Enterprise really showed on Endeavor. Their commitment to total quality made Endeavour the most trouble free of all orbiters and it was delivered on time and under budget."
Before construction began on Endeavour, SSD started a sustained effort, working with NASA, to provide the highest quality vehicle yet. The division instituted numerous initiatives aimed at reducing costs, improving quality and production, and, where possible, exceeding technical requirements.
In making the award, NASA noted the Rockwell team used Total Quality Management methods to provide the agency with a high-quality vehicle. It called the installation of Endeavour's thermal control system tiles "the smoothest of any vehicle delivered." The space agency also reported that Endeavour's left-hand orbital maneuvering system work was completed so efficiently that it was delivered 44 days ahead of schedule, with no major discrepancies. In addition, NASA said, "the efforts of the Materials and Processes team helped Rockwell to control vehicle cleanliness and deliver the cleanest orbiter to date."
NASA's Award for World Class Performance may be earned by a contractor, university, NASA center or other government activity performing work of vital importance to the agency.
Rockwell International is a multi-industry company applying advanced technology to a wide range of products in its electronics, aerospace, automotive and graphics businesses.
