ROCKWELL ANNOUNCES NEW LIGHTWEIGHT ALUMINUM CARRIER DRIVE AXLE

LOUISVILLE, Ky., March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Rockwell International Corporation's Automotive business has announced a development program to introduce an aluminum carrier drive axle in early 1994 that will offer North American truck operators the "lightest drive axle" in the heavy- duty marketplace.
The axle development was announced here at a press briefing held in conjunction with the Mid-America Trucking Show.
Brad Arnold, Rockwell's director of sales and marketing for Axles, said the new RT-40-145A aluminum carrier axle will replace the currently offered SQ-100A (aluminum carrier) and offer even greater weight reduction for weight-sensitive North American truck operations, such as fuel and bulk haulers.
"The heavy-duty market has become extremely weight conscious, and the introduction of the RT-40-145A signals a new generation of axles that are lightweight, extremely durable and feature a wide range of ratios," Arnold said.
Arnold explained that by spec'ing the RT-40-145A, truck operators will be able to specify any of Rockwell's wide variety of axle ratios that range from 2.80 to 7.17.
"The ultimate release of the RT-40-145A culminates a comprehensive product development program undertaken by Rockwell engineers to develop a lightweight axle that gives truck operators the opportunity to choose from fast ratios (2.80) for high performance/high torque rise engines, to slow ratios (7.17) in slow-starting/on-off road applications, to any of the 16 other ratios offered. "Whatever the truck operator needs from his drivetrain lineup, this drive axle family delivers -- and then some," Arnold added.
He added that most truck operators continue to specify overdrive transmissions with conventional axle ratios in the 3.73 to 4.10 range. However, some truck operators are looking to faster axle ratios with direct drive transmissions to increase operating efficiency.
"Rockwell's comprehensive axle ratio offering permits truck operators to select the best overall, optimum-powered drivetrain ratio for their specific operating requirements," said Arnold. The RT-40-145A will be covered by Rockwell's comprehensive warranty package for the 5-year/750,000-mile period. The warranty allows truck operators to select from an extensive list ofk?well-approved lubricants.
In addition to the release of the RT-40-145A, Arnold said that Rockwell engineers are currently working on a variety of programs to further decrease axle weight, and subsequent programs will be announced in the future. "We are committed to developing advanced products, such as the RT-40-145A, that give U.S. and Canadian truck operators the ability to reduce operating costs and not sacrifice durability," he added.
