ROCKWELL AND UNION REPRESENTATIVES AGREE ON CLOSURE
 OF WINCHESTER, KY., FACILITY
WINCHESTER, Ky., May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Rockwell International Corporation's Automotive business management and representatives of the United Auto Workers and the UAW's Local No. 1537 have reached an agreement to close the company's Winchester facility.
The agreement was ratified by members of the UAW Local No. 1537.
The company anticipates the plant will be closed no later than January 1993. The axle components produced there will be transferred through a combination of integration into other Rockwell axle facilities and outsourcing.
Under the agreement, current active employees will be able to retire early, as their jobs are eliminated with full retiree benefits including medical coverage. Affected hourly employees not choosing to retire will have the opportunity to transfer with their work to other Rockwell UAW master facilities. Employees on layoff status who apply for jobs will have preferential hiring rights at current Rockwell UAW master facilities.
Salaried employees will receive individual counseling, outplacement assistance and will be considered for positions at other Rockwell businesses.
Following the closure, Rockwell facilities administration will place the structure on the commercial real estate market.
On April 21, the company had announced the possibility of the closure to the employees and the community. An extremely competitive truck market, coupled with a lack of business for the plant, were factors that prompted an examination of the facility's possible closure.
Rockwell Automotive, with headquarters in Troy, Mich., manufactures a complete lineup of drivetrain components for on- and off-highway vehicles and a full range of component systems for passenger cars and light trucks.
