ROCKWELL, NPO ENERGIA SIGN FOLLOW-ON CONTRACT IN SUPPORT OF UPCOMING JOINT U.S./RUSSIAN SPACE MISSION

DOWNEY, Calif., July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Rockwell International Corp. (NYSE: ROK) and NPO Energia of Moscow today announced they have signed a contract to procure, qualify and flight certify docking hardware in support of a planned 1995 Mir/Space Shuttle docking mission. Rockwell officials traveled to NPO Energia in Russia recently to finalize the agreement.
The firm, fixed-price subcontract to an existing Rockwell/NASA Shuttle contract is valued at approximately $18 million. Work will begin immediately and will culminate with the Mir/Space Shuttle docking mission, currently scheduled for June 1995. Tasks will be performed at Rockwell's Space Systems Division (SSD) and NASA facilities in Downey; Houston; and Cape Canaveral, Fla.
Under terms of the agreement, Rockwell SSD will procure from NPO Energia one certified flight unit of the Russian Androgynous Peripheral Docking Assembly (APDA), spare parts and technical services for ground/flight testing.
NPO Energia's APDA hardware will be assembled into Rockwell's Shuttle airlock at Rockwell's Downey facility for integration into a kit that will be delivered to NASA and installed into a Space Shuttle orbiter. The kit will provide manually controlled capture and latch-up with the Russian space station Mir. The APDA is the docking system designed for Buran/Mir missions.
Rockwell SSD President Robert G. Minor said the agreement is a logical evolution from last year's U.S./Russian summit accord, which called for greater cooperation in space efforts. "Last year's summits between the leaders of the U.S./Russian governments and space agencies opened doors to a new era in space cooperation between our two countries," he said. "Rockwell looks forward to continued cooperation with NPO Energia on this important mission, which may serve as a precursor to future large-scale joint space operations in pursuit of our mutual goal of the exploration and use of space."
Rockwell SSD is prime contractor to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for the Space Shuttle orbiters and built the Apollo Command and Service Modules. The company is under contract to NASA for support to the Mir/Shuttle mission. NPO Energia is an advanced technology organization responsible for the design and manufacture of the Energia launcher and manned systems including the Soyuz-TM and Progress-M spacecraft, the Mir space station and the Buran space shuttle. Rockwell and NPO Energia provided docking hardware for the Apollo/Soyuz Test Project in July 1975.
Rockwell International, headquartered in Seal Beach, Calif., is a multi-industry company applying advanced technology to a wide range of products in its electronics, industrial automation, aerospace, automotive and graphics businesses.
