ROCKWELL, SUMITOMO AND NIPPON SHARYO APPLY DEFENSE TECHNOLOGY TO JAPANESE RAIL MARKET
ANAHEIM, Calif., April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Southern California- based Rockwell International Corp., Sumitomo Corp. and Nippon Sharyo Ltd. have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to apply Rockwell's advanced technology to the Japanese rail market.
The three companies are currently bidding on an 87-car procurement for the Los Angeles Standard Light Rail Vehicle Program. "This new agreement builds on that relationship and is a natural extension of our technology to new markets," said John McLuckey, president of Rockwell's Defense Electronics business, which has developed the technology.
"The Japanese rail transportation industry is encouraging the development and introduction of advanced technology to further improve our rail system, and we are very impressed by Rockwell's broad technological capability," added Tomiichi Akiyama, president of Sumitomo Corp.
Nippon Sharyo Ltd. is one of the world's largest suppliers of railcars. The company has been in the railcar business for 96 years, delivering more than 40,000 passenger cars worldwide.
Sumitomo Corp. is one of the world's leading traders and distributors of a wide spectrum of products, with 1992 trading volume in excess of $149 billion (U.S.).
Rockwell's Defense Electronics business manages all of the company's military electronics activities.
