``When we heard he wasn't going to be at the game, we were in shock,'' Hayes said.

``Rocket has always been so healthy. He's an active guy. He has great life habits. He`s the picture of perfect health. It was hard to imagine him being sick.

``Word about him being in the hospital spread quickly. There's a genuine regard for him in the community. ... He's so loved and respected by everyone.''

Problems developed after the initial surgery, and Collins began internally bleeding on Monday, forcing additional emergency surgery Tuesday to remove his small intestine small intestine

``I'm feeling much better now,'' Collins said from bed Thursday. ``I've was up walking around this morning, just trying to get my strength back. The doctors have told me that they can't believe how well I'm doing.

``I've had a lot of support from everyone during the last couple of days -- the administration at the school, my fellow teachers, my players. It`s been great.''

Collins hopes to go home from the hospital this weekend, though family sources consider it more likely that he'll be released on Monday at the earliest. As for coaching, there's no timetable for his return.

``There was some extensive damage but he's doing a lot better,'' Trujillo said. ``He thought he was going to be able to go home the next day.

``He's funny. Even before he went in for surgery, when he was under heavy anesthesia, he was talking about his players not running the correct plays. He was trying to make substitutions from his bed.''
