ROCK'S ELDERS LOOK FOR HITS.

Byline: Stacy Brown Daily News Staff Writer

The motto for some of the artists at Tuesday's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony is held annually in March and sponsored by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It is one of several annual US music awards shows (including the Billboard Music Awards, the American Music Awards, the Grammy Awards, and the GMA Music  could be described by a hit song - ``Stayin' Alive'' - by one of the honorees.

All of this year's inductees are expected to use the Hall of Fame as a springboard to keep their careers alive. Although his last big hit was 1977's ``Flashlight,'' George Clinton, the leader of Parliament-Funkadelic, reiterated his preference to wait for the award.

``Usually the Hall of Fame means you're through,'' he told a sold-out crowd of 1,300 who paid up to $1,500 apiece for seats. ``I told them we're just getting started,'' he said. Parliament then belted out the group's greatest hits.

Michael Jackson also is using the induction as a way to generate some good will after having his image tarnished and (of late) less then mega-star sales. The ceremonies made for a rare public appearance in America for the King of Pop, who immediately was off to the Cannes film festival Cannes Film Festival

in France to promote his short film, ``Ghosts,'' which is also a single from his newest album, ``Blood on the Dance Floor, HIStory in the Mix,'' due in stores May 22.

Crosby Stills & Nash also hope to parlay the induction into more record sales. After a recent split with Atlantic Records, they are shopping new material to a new label.

The Bee Gees belted out some of their greatest hits, including the 1977 best-selling single, ``Stayin' Alive.'' Coming into the hall, the trio, who begin an American tour in June, hope to put to rest the perception that they can no longer sell records in the United States despite the 40 million they sold from the 1977 ``Saturday Night Fever'' soundtrack.
