The lawsuit alleges sexual harassment and discrimination, unequal pay, failure to pay wages and wrongful termination wrongful termination n. a right of an employee to sue his/her employer for damages (loss of wage and "fringe" benefits, and, if against "public policy," for punitive damages). , among other charges. Navarro, who filed the lawsuit Dec. 24 in Los Angeles County Superior Court, said Robinson is the only person accused of sexual harassment in her suit. ``I was hoping it would never come up. It was ugly,'' Navarro said Sunday. Robinson could not be reached for comment. A university lawyer declined comment Sunday night. Navarro, who was Robinson's secretary for 2-1/2 years, claims that she was not paid the same salary as a male co-worker and did not receive a promised promotion because she spurned spurn v. spurned, spurn·ing, spurns v.tr. 1. Robinson's advances. ``As it turns out, the reason I was not being paid and not given the position I should have had was because I was saying no (to Robinson),'' Navarro said. ``It was because of that harassment and me not participating in it. Sometimes he thinks that if he thinks it's all right, that's the way it is.'' Navarro did not want to discuss her specific claims against Robinson. ``It's not something you can say in one sentence,'' she said. ``There was all of that stuff going on, but I tried to keep away from that. If I just avoided it, if I said `no' and kept myself away from it, I thought I could handle it.'' Just before she was fired, Navarro was promoted to administrative assistant in charge of recruiting. Navarro claims that she had already been performing that job in addition to her secretarial duties, and wanted to be paid appropriately. ``I was doing the equivalent of two jobs. I had been doing the recruiting job since Day 1,'' Navarro said. ``I was hoping USC would resolve it, but they didn't. They ended up terminating me. I was hoping to go to mediation.'' Navarro said she sought $74,000 in back pay in a state labor commission preliminary hearing, and USC has since paid her nearly $15,000. She said her case is still open with the labor commission. Navarro said she hopes her lawsuit is settled before going to trial. ``I certainly hope USC would just settle it,'' Navarro said. Note: Carson Palmer of Santa Margarita High School, considered one of the top quarterbacks in the country, and Peninsula High tight end/defensive end Scott Huber orally committed to USC on Sunday. |
