ROBIN B. SMITH, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF PUBLISHERS CLEARING HOUSE,
 JOINS BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF TEXACO INC.
 WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Jan. 24 /PRNewswire/ - Texaco Inc. (NYSE: TX) announced today that Robin B. Smith, president and chief executive officer of Publishers Clearing House, has been elected to the company's board of directors. Smith's election, which is effective immediately, brings to 16 the number of directors on the Texaco board.
 Publishers Clearing House, a privately owned company based in Port Washington, N.Y., is the largest subscription company in the world. It mails well over 100 million promotional packages a year, offering customers their choices from among more than 250 magazines.
 In making the announcement, Alfred C. DeCrane, Jr., chairman of the board of Texaco Inc., said: "Robin Smith has earned respect in the business and financial communities for her demonstrated leadership and for the innovative concepts she has brought to the companies with which she has been associated. Her broad perspective, objective business counsel and management savvy are welcomed by the Texaco board."
 Prior to being named to the top post at Publishers Clearing House in 1981, Smith, 52, served with Doubleday & Co., Inc., as president and general manager of its Dell Publishing subsidiary. During her 16-year career with Doubleday, she served in positions of increasing responsibility, including director of marketing for the Book Clubs Division and corporate vice president, president and general manager of the Book Clubs Division.
 Smith earned a bachelor of arts degree from Wellesley College in 1961 and a master of business administration from Harvard Business School in 1963.
 In addition to sitting on the board of directors of Publishers Clearing House, Smith is a director of Huffy Corporation, Omnicom Group, Inc., and several Prudential Mutual Funds. She is a member of the visiting committee of the Harvard Board of Overseers to the Harvard Business School.
