ROBERTS GETS $12.5 MILLION TO PLAY THE OLDER WOMAN.

That's the scenario of ``My Best Friend's Wedding,'' which has Dermot Mulroney Dermot Mulroney (born October 31, 1963) is an American actor. Biography

(NOT Roberts' one-time love, Dylan McDermott) as the ``best friend.'' Julia ``suddenly realizes he's the love of her life, when he phones and says he's marrying a younger girl. She must win him back,'' reports screenwriter Ron Bass.

The feature is a month into production and ``the chemistry between Dermot and Julia is obvious. It's clear they dig each other,'' notes Bass.

``Best Friend's Wedding,'' for which Julia is reportedly getting a queen-size $12.5 million paycheck, has her back ``as we love to see her,'' according to Bass. (That's complete with long, lush brunet hair after her questionable go-round with ginger coloring.) It's good news for Roberts' fans who stayed away in droves from her Jekyll & Hyde flop, ``Mary Reilly.''

``I understand and applaud Julia for doing different types of stories. It's wonderful she doesn't go with the easy identification, and personally, I love to see her in anything,'' comments the Oscar-winning (``Rain Man'') Bass, whose last collaboration with Roberts was 1991's ``Sleeping With the Enemy.'' ``It's just that this role is very much in her wheelhouse wheel·house

In the groove: Bass reports he's had his first meetings with author Terry McMillan - they collaborated on ``Waiting to Exhale'' - to plan the big-screen adaptation of McMillan's ``How Stella Got Her Groove Back.'' ``We both had the same ideas of how to structure the film, which is kind of amazing,'' he says. ``You never know how long it'll take before you can hit a common vision - and we seem to have come in with one.''

Too hot to handle: It's interesting that Showtime has picked up ``Bastard Out of Carolina,'' the film that marks Anjelica Huston's directorial debut. Ted Turner - the man behind the project in which Jennifer Jason Leigh plays a '50s mother whose daughter is abused by her poor white-trash stepfather - reportedly decided it was too raw for his TNT TNT: see trinitrotoluene.

The Showtime pickup also comes after a slew of studios turned thumbs-down on distributing the drama, which, we're told, has turned out to be very dark and searing sear 1

The inside track: The very hot jazz pianist Jacky Terrasson's second Blue Note CD, ``Reach,'' has been receiving very high praise from jazz critics nationwide. We recorded the whole album with two microphones, and with the engineer in the same room.'' Terrasson is currently on tour overseas and is laying plans to tour the States in the fall.

Doing the hustle: Get ready for a passel of hustler pics ... starting this month with MGM's ``Kingpin,'' which has Bill Murray playing a bowling hustler. The upcoming ``Tin Cup'' features Kevin Costner as a golf hustler. ``Yanqui Dollar,'' a thriller starring Maria Conchita Alonso, is the tale of a child street hustler and of a jaded U.S. gangster on the run. Then there's ``Changing Habits,'' in which you'll see Moira Kelly playing a hustler who falls for the art shop owner she's robbed. And if all that isn't enough, there will be ``Rhythm Thief,'' about a hustler peddling bootleg music on the streets of New York New York, state, United States
