The 21st Century Workforce Commission, created by legislation drafted by Rep. Howard P. ``Buck'' McKeon, R-Santa Clarita, will devise recommendations for legislation and administrative action to maintain the nation's domination in the information technology industry.

``Frank Roberts has a great record of achievement, both in local government and in the vocational education vocational education, training designed to advance individuals' general proficiency, especially in relation to their present or future occupations. The term does not normally include training for the professions.  world,'' McKeon said. ``I believe he will bring an innovative approach to this commission as it explores ways to preserve our nation's edge in information technologies.''

Concurrently, Roberts worked at the University of California, Los Angeles UCLA comprises the College of Letters and Science (the primary undergraduate college), seven professional schools, and five professional Health Science schools. Since 2001, UCLA has enrolled over 33,000 total students, and that number is steadily rising. , as a professor of vocational education for 12 years.

``I was amazed. I'm sure there were a lot of submissions,'' Roberts said of his selection. ``They must of wanted a leader who had a vocational training background.''

Under McKeon's bill, the Speaker of the House has the authority to appoint five representatives to the 150-member panel.

At McKeon's request, Roberts will be appointed by the new speaker, U.S. Rep. Robert Livingston Robert Livingston was the name of several men, many of whom were members of a prominent family that effectively ran New York throughout the colonial and Federal periods.

The commission will comprise eight people from business, one from labor, two state or local government officials, three from education, and one representing the research community. Roberts will be one of the government officials.

The other appointments to the commission will be made by President Clinton and the majority leader of the Senate, Trent Lott, R-Miss.

The commission will study the skills necessary to enter the information technology work force; look for ways to expand the number of skilled information technology workers; and to examine the effectiveness of programs in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  and other countries to train such workers.

The commission members will serve without pay.

Roberts is also a board member of the Los Angeles County Private Industry Council, which provides recommendations to the Board of Supervisors on how to allocate job-training funds.
