ROBERT EPSTEIN, 67, JOURNALIST, COLLEGE LECTURER.

Robert Aaron Epstein, a longtime newspaper journalist who held executive positions at the Herald Examiner and the Los Angeles Times Los Angeles Times

Morning daily newspaper. Established in 1881, it was purchased and incorporated in 1884 by Harrison Gray Otis (1837–1917) under The Times-Mirror Co. (the hyphen was later dropped from the name).
, died Thursday after a brief bout with cancer, family members said.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 19 for Epstein at the Stephen S. Wise Temple, 15500 Stephen Wise Drive, Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. .

Epstein, who lived in Sherman Oaks until 1992, was 67 when he died at home in Carlsbad, Calif., his son Matthew said.

Born in Denver, Epstein received his master's degree in communications at UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

 and wrote several nonfiction and children's books.

He began as an editorial director of the Sunday magazine California Living at the Herald Examiner, where he worked for 22 years and moved up to assistant Sunday editor, Sunday editor and assistant managing editor.

In 1977, he moved to the Los Angeles Times, where he was executive arts editor of the Calendar section and later became a columnist.

Epstein also lectured on journalism at UCLA, Los Angeles Trade Tech, the University of Southern California The U.S. News & World Report ranked USC 27th among all universities in the United States in its 2008 ranking of "America's Best Colleges", also designating it as one of the "most selective universities" for admitting 8,634 of the almost 34,000 who applied for freshman admission  and California State University, Los Angeles California State University, Los Angeles (also known as Cal State L.A., CSULA, or "'CSLA"') is a public university, part of the California State University system. .

Epstein is survived by his wife, Jackie, to whom he was married for 41 years; two sons, Matthew and Andrew, both of Los Angeles; and two daughters, Elaine Hallett of Los Angeles and Eden Rock of Minneapolis.

The memorial service will begin at 1 p.m. Jan. 19 at the Stephen S. Wise Temple.
