Paul Seukunian, 51, the owner of Legacy Liquor at 1800 W. Olive Ave., has been charged in a case in which he says he was scared and believes he was simply defending himself.

``It doesn't make sense to me,'' he said. ``I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

If convicted, he could face up to a year in jail, police said.

No one was hit in the incident. Authorities have not identified a suspect in the robbery, but they maintain the shooting was unwarranted.

``We think the city attorney took the appropriate action,'' said Burbank police Sgt. Jay Jette. ``The liquor store owner has to use proper care and caution when protecting himself or his store.''

Seukunian said he was defending himself against a 6-foot-tall man, wearing a navy-blue polo polo, indoor or outdoor ball and goal game played on horseback. Rules and Equipment

Seukunian, who has no criminal record, said he tried to grab the robber, who reached out and hit him on the head. Police said there is no evidence the robber was armed.

``I grabbed my gun quickly from under the cash register and ran after him,'' Seukunian said. Outside, he said he heard someone scream, ``That's the truck!''

He then aimed his handgun and fired two shots at the wheels of a gold-colored Ford pickup, but the truck disappeared.

Investigators said they don't know if the truck at which Seukunian fired was the actual getaway vehicle.

``I didn't put anybody in jeopardy jeopardy, in law, condition of a person charged with a crime and thus in danger of punishment. At common law a defendant could be exposed to jeopardy for the same offense only once; exposing a person twice is known as

,'' he said. ``There was nobody in the street except for the truck that was making a U-turn and leaving. It happened very, very quick. I was very afraid.''
