ROBBERY SUSPECTS ENTER NOT GUILTY PLEA.

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. The u.s. justice department categorizes the crime of carjacking as a "completed or attempted Robbery of a motor vehicle by a stranger
 and robbery pleaded not guilty Friday, prosecutors said.

Roommates Trahern Bryson, 28, and Kenyata Cockrell, 23, entered the plea in a Newhall courtroom and are expected to appear May 8 for a preliminary hearing.

``Apparently, they had been friends at one time,'' said District Attorney Michael Noyes of the victim and suspects. ``But they're friendship had fallen apart.''

Officials said the suspects followed Chad Collins, 24, to the 25800 block of San Fernando Road San Fernando Road is a major street in the city and county of Los Angeles. It starts off in Castaic as The Old Road, passing through Santa Clarita and the Newhall Pass, where upon its intersection with Sierra Highway near the junction of the Golden State (I-5) and the  shortly before 7 p.m. Monday where they confronted him and demanded money.

``They were trying to extort To compel or coerce, as in a confession or information, by any means serving to overcome the other's power of resistance, thus making the confession or admission involuntary. To gain by wrongful methods; to obtain in an unlawful manner, as in to compel payments by means of threats of  money from eBay and blaming Collins (for its failure),'' Noyes said. ``They were claiming he owed them money.''

When Collins said he had no money, the men searched his pockets, punched him on the side of his face and then threatened to kill him, police said. The two men are in sheriff's custody in lieu of $100,000 bail each.
