The 5-foot-10 Winther, a four-year starter, has averaged 20.3 points with 19 points or more in four of six games this season. Royal (6-0) opened the season by winning the championship of the Valencia tournament and defeated Santa Paula Santa Paula (săn`tə pôl`ə), city (1990 pop. 25,062), Ventura co., S Calif., on the Santa Clara River in a fertile valley that yields citrus fruits, avocados, vegetables, flowers, nursery products, and walnuts; laid out 1875, inc.  (75-21) Wednesday and Rio Mesa (65-46) Thursday in the Gold Coast tournament.

Heteniak, a 6-foot post player, and Moore, a 6-1 center, complement Winther with their inside play.

``They're like bookends,'' Kohl said. ``They will be the key for us.''

Heteniak, a third-year player, is averaging 11.3 points and 9.2 rebounds. She scored 19 in Royal's victory of Stockdale of Bakersfield in the second round of the Valencia tournament.

Kohl is excited about Moore, whom he predicts has the potential to play Division I college basketball College basketball most often refers to the American basketball competitive governance structure established by the National Collegiate Athletic Association, or NCAA. History

Selleh and Winther have the go-ahead from Kohl to put it up from behind the 3-point arc when the opportunity arises.

Kohl is carrying 14 players on his roster and won't hesitate to go deep down his bench. He said one of his greatest frustrations was finding players ample playing time during preseason scrimmages.

Senior guard Bev Lamphiear (5-7), sophomore guard Jen Mosier (5-6), freshman guard Erika Ward (5-6), senior post Hayley McArthur (5-10) and senior center Nikki Suffolk (6-2) receive significant playing time.

Kohl tabs his team as the Marmonte League front-runner, with 2003 Southern Section Div. III-AA finalist Newbury Park, Simi Valley and Calabasas contending for second.

``I know everybody is expecting us to be good and the clear favorite,'' Kohl said. ``We'll be good this season, but the Marmonte League is brutal, and you can't count on winning. Every game will be a war.''
