ROADWAY SERVICES ANNOUNCES START UP AIR FREIGHT OPERATION

AKRON, Ohio, May 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Roadway Services, Inc. (NASDAQ: ROAD) announced today that the company will enter the heavy air freight business with the start up of Roadway Global Air, Inc. in September.
Joseph M. Clapp, chairman and president, told shareholders at the company's annual meeting today that Roadway Global Air, or RGA, will focus on shipments weighing 25 pounds and over and will provide a complete range of service levels, from next day to second day to deferred service.
"RGA will offer a new standard for quality and efficiency in air transportation from 50 air logistics centers in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia," said Clapp.
RGA will contract for its own dedicated leased airlift and will operate its own airfreight hub to be located in Terre Haute, Indiana.
"The transportation service will be highly engineered, monitored and facilitated by a state-of-the-art information systems platform," said Clapp.
RGA will be led by Donald G. Berger, former president of CF Airfreight and Emery Worldwide. The company will be overseen by Daniel J. Sullivan, president of Roadway Services' national carrier group, under whose leadership this project has been researched and planned.
Clapp told shareholders that, despite difficult times for air freight and passenger carriers, the company believes RGA will be successful. He cited independent research that indicates a substantial percentage of potential customers willing to try the new service.
"RGA will not be just another air freight company," said Clapp. "RGA will bring a new standard for quality and reliability to this important market, which is a substantial one."
Clapp told shareholders that the company anticipates that the total cash investment required until profit is attained will be in the vicinity of $100 million. The total investment will include the financing of operating losses and capital investments.
Roadway Services, a $3.6 billion transportation and logistics holding company, also owns Roadway Express, Inc., one of the nation's largest motor carriers; Roadway Package System, Inc., serving shippers in the small package market; regional carriers Viking Freight, Inc., Spartan Express, Inc., Coles Express, Inc., and Central Freight Lines Inc., serving the country's major geographic regions; Roberts Express, Inc., a critical shipment carrier; and Roadway Logistics Systems, Inc., which provides contract logistics services.
