ROADS SHUT AS GLENDALE AWAITS STORM FUNDS.

Byline: Naush Boghossian Staff Writer

GLENDALE - Four roads Four Roads Crossing is a level crossing on the Isle Of Man Railway just short of the penultimate station at Port St Mary and is very similar in design to that at Ballasalla insofar as it has a very similar style of crossing hut (albeit the one at Ballasalla has been whitewashed),  remain closed in Glendale, one of the cities hardest hit by this year's damaging winter storms, as officials await federal disaster-aid funding for repairs.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is the federal agency responsible for coordinating emergency planning, preparedness, risk reduction, response, and recovery. ``Glendale had most of the significant damage occur in the first storm. For other cities, the money has been released because their application process was shorter since they had fewer claims,'' said Jim Frawley, emergency services emergency services Emergency care '…services …necessary to prevent death or serious impairment of health and, because of the danger to life or health, require the use of the most accessible hospital available and equipped to furnish those services'  and homeland security Noun 1. The storms, which lasted from Dec. 27 to Jan. 11, wreaked havoc throughout the Southland, saturating the ground and causing landslides. In Glendale, mountains fractured and moved and several homes were damaged or endangered by mudslides, Frawley said.

Four streets, including Camino San Rafael and portions of Cavanagh Road and Gladys Drive, remain closed and one home is still red-tagged and cannot be occupied.

The city is assessing damage to the roads and expects to soon begin determining repairs.

Glendale filed details of the scope of the damages with FEMA after the first storm; a report after the second storm is in the filing stage.

Officials have been meeting with FEMA representatives and reviewing project lists, estimates and repair costs.

Once they receive approval for costs eligible for reimbursement, it could be weeks before the state releases the funds.

``In communities along the foothills, like Glendale, they tended to suffer proportionately greater damage because they were more vulnerable to landslides and flash flooding,'' said David Fukutomi, federal coordinating officer Appointed by the Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, on behalf of the President, to coordinate federal assistance to a state affected by a disaster or emergency. The source and level of the federal coordinating officer will likely depend on the nature of the federal  for FEMA.

FEMA has already approved $147,283 for Burbank and $8,028 for the Glendale Unified School District The Glendale Unified School District is a school district based in Glendale, California, United States.

The school district serves the city of Glendale, portions of the city of La CaƱada and the unincorporated communities of Montrose and La Crescenta.
. So far in Los Angeles County, the agency has paid out $16.2 million for 268 projects.

But the agency still expect to receive more applications, FEMA spokeswoman Anjanette Stayton said.

``It's an ongoing process and we see the numbers continue to grow,'' she said.

Burbank expects to file a few more applications before the city is done with storm repairs, said Penny Forbes, administrative analyst for the city of Burbank's Public Works Department Many governments worldwide have had departments or ministries referred to as the Public Works Department either formally or informally.
