ROAD-WIDENING PROJECT FUELED BY AEROSPACE EXPANSION HOPES CITY OKS PRELIMINARY PLANS TO ADD LANES TO BOULEVARD.

Byline: Jim Skeen Staff Writer

PALMDALE - Trying to set the stage to accommodate future aerospace industry growth, Palmdale officials have commissioned a preliminary engineering project for widening 3.3 miles of Rancho ran·cho

City officials want to widen the road east of the Antelope Valley Freeway The Antelope Valley Freeway is a freeway in Los Angeles and Kern counties in southern California. It is signed as California State Highway 14 along its length. It runs from Tunnel Station near the north limit of the City of Los Angeles, where it intersects with San Fernando Road and Foothill Boulevard, as well as Interstate 5, and continues north to Mojave, mostly paralleling , which gets jammed with aerospace workers heading to and from work at morning and evening traffic peaks.

``This is the No. 1 one road-widening project for the city because of the congestion,'' Mayor Jim Ledford said last week.

The contractor, Lim and Nascimento Engineering Corp., the same firm overseeing the Avenue S corridor widening, will begin the preliminary engineering for the widening of Rancho Vista Boulevard between Fairway Drive, which is just east of the Antelope Valley Freeway, and 30th Street East. The firm is conducting the work under a $344,000 contract.

The plan is to expand the road from two lanes in each direction to three lanes in each direction with a median. The work would also include bike paths on both sides of the road.

Intersections would be striped with left-turn pockets and, where necessary, widened for right-turn lanes as well.

By completing a preliminary engineering report, the city will have a better understanding on how much the widening will cost and be in a better position to receive federal funding, said Leon Swain, the city's public works public works

The timetable for the project will depend on when the city can secure funding. The work will likely be done in phases, with the most critical area being the intersection with Sierra Highway, Swain said.

A widened Rancho Vista Boulevard will aid in attracting a company to Site 9, the former B-1B bomber assembly plant at 30th Street East, city officials said.
