ST. LOUIS - Derek Lowe Derek Christopher Lowe[1] (born June 1, 1973 in Dearborn, Michigan)[2] is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He throws and bats right-handed.  appeared to have just gotten Albert Pujols “Pujols” redirects here. For other uses, see Pujols (disambiguation).

He is noted for his size, as he is a small (for professional sports) 5' 7", but weighs 175 pounds.  at third base and appeared to have preserved the Dodgers' one-run lead for another inning. Consequently, all nine Dodgers fielders began jogging off the field.

But appearances can be deceiving. Just ask Dana DeMuth Dana Andrew DeMuth (born May 30 1956 in Fremont, Ohio) is an umpire in Major League Baseball. His major league career began in 1985; he umpired in the National League until the umpiring staffs from the American and National Leagues merged in 2000. .

The veteran umpire called Larry Walker
Larry Kenneth Robert Walker (born December 1, 1966 in Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada) is a former right fielder in Major League Baseball. From 1989 through 2005, Walker played for the Montreal Expos (1989-94), Colorado Rockies (1995-2004) and St.

April 9, 1976, in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico) has spent much of this decade as a third baseman for the Mexico City Red Devils (Diablos Rojos del México), and briefly as an infielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers from May 2005 through 2006.  had come off the bag too early in taking the feed from shortstop Cesar Izturis. The call prolonged an inning the Dodgers won't soon forget. It also proved pivotal in yet another, frustrating loss to the Cardinals, this one 10-3 in front of 45,656 in their final regular-season appearance at soon-to-be-demolished Busch Stadium This article is about the current sports venue in St. Louis, Missouri that opened in 2006. Dodgers manager Jim Tracy argued the call with DeMuth, but to no avail. Dodgers pitcher Jeff Weaver, scheduled to start tonight against Atlanta, argued so strongly from the dugout that DeMuth ejected him.

In the end, though, it was Lowe who failed to recover. After DeMuth's call allowed Eckstein to score the tying run, Lowe gave up hits to the next three batters. Those, along with a throwing error by J.D. Drew and a passed ball by catcher Paul Bako, allowed the Cardinals to take a 5-2 lead. The Dodgers got one back on Lowe's RBI RBI

single in the top of the fourth, but the Dodgers then failed to drive in Bako after he reached third with none out.

That inning ended when Drew struck out. The right fielder is 2 for 25 for the season with runners in scoring position and went 1 for 14 in this four-game series, failing to hit a single ball out of the infield.

For the Dodgers, the game fell apart from there. But it turned on DeMuth's call.

``When he stretched for the ball, he pulled his foot, before he secured the ball,'' DeMuth said. ``I showed him where he stepped off. I looked at (the replay) a few times (after the game), and I really couldn't determine.''

Robles Robles is a common surname in the Spanish language meaning oaks, and may refer to:
    • Alfonso García Robles (1911-1991), Mexican diplomat and politician
    • Aurora Robles (born 1980), Mexican fashion model
    • Charlie Robles (born 1943), Puerto Rican musician
, who was charged with an error on the play, didn't need to see the replay.

``When I caught the ball, I could feel the bag against my heel,'' he said. ``And then, I jumped (to avoid Walker sliding in). But (DeMuth) said I missed the bag. It's not my decision.''

The Dodgers lost three of four to the Cardinals in a series that epitomized the dangers of failing to put away hitters in two-strike counts and failing to put down innings with two outs. In winning the final two games, Cardinals hitters reached base with two outs 25 times.

Three of those, though, came immediately after DeMuth's call.

``That play obviously was a turning point in this game,'' Tracy said.

``I looked at the replay, and his heel was touching the base. It was a missed call. ... I think the situation snowballed after that because it disrupted some focus.''

Lowe, who in his past two starts has been on the mound for a six-run inning and a five-run inning, denied being affected by the call.

``You still have to keep pitching,'' he said. ``When you look at this game, I think out of the 10 hits I allowed, probably eight of them came with two strikes. Against a lineup like theirs, it comes down to execution. There were plenty of other opportunities for me to get out of that inning without them scoring five runs.''

The Dodgers (20-14) have lost consecutive games for the first time since being swept by Arizona April 25-27. Lowe (2-4) was charged with just two earned runs and still has a respectable 2.94 ERA, a sign his lackluster start with his new club is more the result of bad luck than bad pitching.
