ROAD TO THE ROSE BOWL: MIAMI SURVIVES, WITH A LITTLE LUCK.Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer Miami passed the test. Barely. It wasn't pretty. Maybe it was even a fluke. And it ended on the wackiest of plays. But one thing is certain: Miami is still the legitimate front-runner, along with Nebraska, to play for the national title at the Rose Bowl. Call it destiny. Call it luck. But call it a win. Quarterback Ken Dorsey Kenneth Simon Dorsey (born April 22, 1981 in Orinda, California) is an NFL quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. Dorsey is a former college football star at the University of Miami, where he was a Heisman Trophy finalist in both 2001 and 2002. , a Heisman Trophy Heisman Trophy Annual award given to the outstanding college gridiron football player in the U.S. The trophy was instituted in 1935 by New York City's Downtown Athletic Club and was officially named the following year for the club's first athletic director, the player-coach candidate, didn't pass any tests as he threw four interceptions against Boston College Boston College, main campus at Chestnut Hill, Mass.; coeducational; Jesuit; est. and opened 1863. Actually a university, the school's Chestnut Hill campus comprises colleges of arts and sciences and business administration, the graduate school, and schools of nursing after throwing just four all season. It was the 'Canes defense that kept a January trip to Pasadena plausible. With BC poised to score in the final minute, quarterback Brian St. Pierre Brian St. Pierre (born November 28 1979 in Salem, Massachusetts) is a quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The ball hit Miami defensive back Ed Rumph's knee and careened off it. And players and coaches have been defensive about the soft preseason schedule and BCS (1) (The British Computer Society, Swindon, Wiltshire, England, www.bcs.org) The chartered body for information technology professionals in the U.K., founded in 1957. ranking. But Dorsey believes Saturday's win should pass the test in the eyes of many. ``We're tested now. Everybody who thinks we're an untested team, ... well, now we're tested,'' he said. The Hurricanes (8-0) were clinging to a five-point lead in the final minute when the Eagles drove to the 9 before the play off the knee - probably the most uncanny play in college football this season - saved the season. Miami still has to play Syracuse, Washington and Virginia Tech. --Cornhuskers come back: For the first time all season, Nebraska - the top-ranked team in the BCS - trailed at halftime against Kansas State. But the 11-0 Cornhuskers, who surpassed Miami for the No. 1 spot in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll, should keep their top ranking in the BCS after a 31-21 comeback victory. The Cornhuskers defense held the Jayhawks to 22 yards of offense in the third quarter. Nebraska must play Colorado and probably Oklahoma, again, in the Big 12 Championship game. --One-loss wonders: Every week Miami and Nebraska remain undefeated the BCS breathes a sigh of relief. If Miami and Nebraska both lost one game, the BCS could have a plethora of teams with one loss. Seven of the top 10 teams in the AP poll - Oklahoma, Florida, Texas, Tennessee, Oregon, Washington State and Maryland - all have just one loss. With a loss by the Hurricanes and Cornhuskers, at least nine teams - and let's not Let's Not is a science fiction short story by Isaac Asimov. BYU held on for a 41-34 win over a hapless Wyoming team Saturday. The Cougars are ranked eighth in the AP and ESPN/USA Today polls but probably will be about 13th in the BCS rankings. BYU likely won't get a BCS bowl berth since it plays in the Mountain West Conference. --Florida romp: Florida's 54-17 blasting of Lou Holtz's South Carolina South Carolina, state of the SE United States. It is bordered by North Carolina (N), the Atlantic Ocean (SE), and Georgia (SW). Facts and Figures Area, 31,055 sq mi (80,432 sq km). Pop. (2000) 4,012,012, a 15. team paid dividends in the rankings that matter most. The 8-1 Gators remained at No. 4 in the AP poll but should move up two spots - passing Tennessee and Texas - to fifth in the BCS rankings. Nebraska, Miami and Oklahoma should maintain the top three spots. At least Nebraska or Oklahoma (if they play in the Big 12 Championship game) surely will have another loss. Florida still has a realistic - but not probable - shot at the national title game. --No lame Ducks: Oregon now has the inside track on the Pacific-10 Conference's berth in the BCS' Fiesta Bowl The Fiesta Bowl, now sponsored by Tostitos tortilla chips (a Frito-Lay product), is a United States college football game played annually since 1971. Originally, the game was hosted in Tempe, Arizona at Sun Devil Stadium where it remained until 2006. . A close Pac-10 race is now Oregon's to lose after a 21-20 win Saturday over UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University) UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX . The No. 7 Ducks (9-1) should jump from sixth to fourth in the BCS rankings.
