) today announced the publication of special reports covering two catastrophic events in 1999: the August 17 earthquake in Izmit, Turkey and the September 21 earthquake in Chi-Chi, Taiwan.

The reports offer in-depth analysis of the affected regions, geologic effects, causes of structural damages, business interruption losses, insured and economic loss estimates, and issues for recovery and reconstruction.

Since presenting its preliminary findings from reconnaissance surveys last fall, RMS has been closely tracking post-event activities and impacts. The reports highlight key lessons for the insurance and risk management community worldwide. For example, the interaction between the August 17 earthquake in Izmit, Turkey and the November 12 earthquake in nearby Duzce suggests that different, and perhaps more severe scenarios may need to be considered for other regions with complex faulting systems, such as the San Andreas San Andreas is an Anglicisation of the Spanish language San Andrés (Saint Andrew, the Apostle). It may refer to:
  • San Andreas Fault, a geologic fault that runs through California, USA
in California. The reports also explore business interruption impacts and recovery strategies through several case studies, including the coordinated power rationing of high-technology businesses in Taiwan's Hsinchu Science Park Hsinchu Science Park (Chinese: 新竹科學園區; Hanyu Pinyin: Xīnzhú Kē Xué Yuán Qū; Tongyong Pinyin: Sinjhú Ke Syué Yuán Cyu) was established by the government of Taiwan, ROC on December 15, 1980 with investment from the Kuomintang. .

While the Turkey and Taiwan earthquakes generated catastrophic levels of damage and life loss, both can be regarded as a near misses. The major population centers of Taipei and Istanbul, each with over 10 million residents, are located in zones of high seismic risk Seismic risk takes the results of seismic hazard analysis, and calculates the 'follies of man'. Your safety depends on what you build. You can locate in a region of high seismic hazard, but still sleep fairly soundly at night if you have built to sound engineering principles. . Dr. Fouad Bendimerad, general secretary of the Earthquakes and Megacities Initiative and Managing Director of RMS, commented on the implications of these events. "These earthquakes demonstrate the urgency for megacities in catastrophe-prone areas to put in place disaster preparedness and mediation plans."

The 16-page reports contain full-color graphics and photographs supplementing RMS' findings, and are available for purchase online at www.riskinc.com.
