RIVER PLANTS WILL BE KILLED NONNATIVES ARE TARGET.

Byline: Patricia Farrell Aidem Staff Writer

A long-term plan is being drafted to rid the Santa Clara River Santa Clara River may refer to:
  • Santa Clara River (California), a river in Southern California, United States.
  • Santa Clara River (Utah), a river in Utah, United States
  • Carmen River, a river in Mexico that is sometimes called the Santa Clara River
of a nonnative plant blamed for encouraging the spread of wildfires and contributing to flooding in the rainy season.

The project will be up for public review later this month at hearings in Acton and Valencia to raise awareness about the environmental issues affecting the river.

The goal of the Ventura Resource Conservation District and other local state and federal agencies is to rid the entire Santa Clara Santa Clara, city, Cuba

The plants are often heathlike and thrive in arid and coastal regions. . The former is a bamboolike plant introduced to California a century ago as ornamental shrubbery, but one that sucks the water out of the river, dries into kindling kindling (kinˑ·dling),

This winter's heavy rain resulted in flooding along state Highway 126, which follows the meandering river from Valencia to Oxnard, where it meets the Pacific. Huge piles of arrundo, which grows to be 20 to 25 feet high, were washed to the beach but not before damming sections of the river and sending torrents onto the highway.

Arrundo also was blamed for the rapid spread of a 2003 fire that swept from Val Verde Val Verde may mean:

The Stevenson Ranch fountain was redone in 2007. .

Now the fear is that the wet winter will cause the weed to proliferate, said Noreen Cabanting, project manager for the conservation district, the lead agency in the removal program. Arrundo is tough to eradicate because its roots quickly replant re·plant

The Ventura-based group plans to begin the removal effort upstream because the seeds carry southwest with the river flow.
