RIVALS MEET, SOME WITH TITLE ON THE LINE.

Byline: GERRY GITTELSON Staff Writer

The last week week of the high school football season always features some of the region's biggest rivalries. Some have existed for a long time, such as Glendale-Hoover (72 years). Fresher rivalries, such as Paraclete-Kilpatrick, are even more intense because both are among the top teams in their division. A look at this week's biggies:

THURSDAY

Forget Kennedy-Granada Hills, who aren't even in the same league anymore. Thursday's Kennedy-San Fernando matchup is for second place in the Valley Mission League and, much more importantly, a probable berth in the City Championship playoffs; the loser figures to be relegated to the less-prestigious Invitational in·vi·ta·tion·al

There are eight City Section leagues of varying strength, and league champions are the only ones guaranteed a berth.

``This is our biggest game. It's for all the marbles,'' San Fernando coach Sean Blunt said. ``Whoever loses probably doesn't make the championship playoffs. I believe we're capable of beating any team on a given night, so we don't want to be in the (Invitational).''

San Fernando has a 15-12 series advantage. This year, the Tigers have been plagued with injuries. But now they're healthy, particularly quarterback Ruben Nevarez. He completed 7 of 11 passes for 94 yards in a 28-25 loss to Sylmar on Friday after missing two games with a shoulder injury.

Kennedy, coming off Friday's 42-6 victory over Reseda (the sixth time the Golden Cougars have surpassed 40 points), has more firepower fire·pow·er

``When Kennedy opened (in 1971), they took half the students from San Fernando and half from Granada Hills,'' Kennedy coach Bob Francola said. ``For a long time, there were fights every day on campus. I remember in 1974, Kennedy beat San Fernando, and from then on it's been a really huge rivalry. We feel like the Granada Hills rivalry is a 9 and San Fernando is a 10.''

playoffs this year (it used to be four) because the Bay League was added. That means Highland is all but eliminated. The Bulldogs have to win, combined with two other upsets. However, coaches Brent Newcomb of Antelope Valley and Lin Parker of Highland have their own special bet: The loser does all the busy work for the winner on their annual weekend fishing trip after the season.

``It looks like I might be starting fires and doing dishes,'' Parker said. ``But until Thursday, we're the defending league champions, and we plan to play like champions.''

Parker and Newcomb coached together at Antelope Valley before Highland opened 11 years ago. In fact, Parker's grandfather played on Antelope Valley's first football team in 1908.

``Antelope Valley is the mother school of the area, so of course you always want to beat them,'' Parker said. ``You don't want to play the Sisters of the Poor. You want to step up and play the best, and this year we hope to draw on that.''

Highland has won three of the last four games in the series, including a 16-3 victory last season.

Highland's main concern tonight is stopping Antelope Valley option quarterback Demetre Booker, who Parkers calls ``the hardest quarterback in the league (to contain).''

This season, Simi Valley has lost every game by at least two touchdowns, but Royal cannot look past the struggling Pioneers.

``That would be the worst thing that could happen to our football team,'' said Royal coach Gene Uebelhardt, who is expecting close to 10,000 fans, as usual. ``In a series like this anything can happen. We've got to come with the attitude that we're gonna gon·na

Simi Valley leads the series 19-11-1, including five consecutive victories from 1994-98. But Royal has won two in a row, including a 24-22 win last year.

This year, Royal has an explosive running back in junior Greg Morris, who has 882 yards - an average of 9.6 per carry - and 12 TDs. Simi Valley must contain him to have a chance.

PACIFIC LEAGUE

GLENDALE (0-9, 0-4)

at HOOVER (0-9, 0-4)

7 p.m.

Southern California's oldest rivalry - tonight marks the 72nd meeting - has an interesting twist this year because both teams are seeking their first victory.

In the past, when this game was at the Rose Bowl, as many as 25,000 fans would attend. Things are a lot different now, but both teams would love a victory.

``It's a built-in tradition,'' said Glendale first-year coach Loi Phan, who played for Glendale in 1983-85 - and never beat the Tornadoes. ``This year we're both pretty even, but I think my chances are pretty good.''

Phan bases his optimism on last week's performance against Pasadena: Glendale was leading at halftime for the first time this season before falling 26-13. He also believes his fullback, Dustin Nersesyan, will be the most dominant player on the field. Nersesyan has 552 yards and one TD this season.

Hoover hasn't scored more than touchdown in a game over the last five weeks, and key starters are injured in·jure

. But first-year coach Ron Swartz is hoping the spirit of the rivalry will carry the Tornadoes.

``My kids are all fired up right now,'' he said. ``It's going to be a big deal. We have got to get the monkey off our back. Anytime you have two winless teams playing against each other, it adds to the pressure. Both of us want to end the season with a win.''

FOOTHILL LEAGUE

``Burbank was better in the '80s, and Burroughs was better in the '90s,'' Knoop said. ``This is a new era, and I know it would make Burbank's whole season to beat us. This game is always big, and there's always fireworks fireworks: see pyrotechnics.

These two have met in the Division XII finals two years in a row, but this being a competitive rivalry is an illusion; Paraclete is 4-0 against Kilpatrick, including the championship victories, and the average margin of victory has been 16 points.

That's how we motivate them. It's a challenge because Paraclete is a great program. They're real tough. A lot of people have doubted us, but we've played some tough teams.''

If Paraclete contains Kilpatrick running Jeremey Hartsfield, the Spirits should be OK. Paraclete has more weapons, including running backs Curtis Brown

What was once a rivalry featuring two of Southern California's most consistent powers has faded. Notre Dame has remained strong, but Crespi has slumped.

This year, the teams are farther apart than ever. Nevertheless, Crespi coach Ron Gueringer doesn't believe the matchup has lost all of its luster.

``Crespi-Notre Dame is just like USC-UCLA,'' he said. ``It goes back a number of years, and it's still a great rivalry. We're going to come and compete as hard as we can. It's been a tough year for us and we've sustained a lot of injuries. It's going to be tough again because Notre Dame has the best defense we've seen all season. They're outstanding, and they don't make mistakes.''

St. Paul improved when heralded running back De'Andre Scott transferred from Alemany two games ago. The senior All-America prospect rushed for 185 yards and a 54-yard touchdown in a league-opening victory over Bishop Amata, followed by Friday's 115-yard, three-TD performance in a win over his old teammates.

about Scott switching schools in the middle of the season. He said he voiced a complaint to Southern Section officials, who declared Scott's transfer legal because he changed residences.

``So a player could play for nine schools in nine weeks?'' Grady said. ``The whole thing is unreal and not what high school football is supposed to be about. De'Andre's a high-profile player, but our school and our administration would have never taken him in the middle of season. He left one team for a team that could block for him a little better. If it was up to me, I would have had the integrity to say no. I'm sure I would have.''

At any rate, Grady said St. Paul is ``much more explosive now.'' Loyola's new game plan is to stop Scott, who had 532 yards and four TDs in six games for Alemany.

``St. Paul went from good to very, very, very good,'' Grady said.

Quarterback Matt Ware Matthew Jesse Ware (born December 2, 1982 in Santa Monica, California) is currently an American football defensive back in the NFL for the Arizona Cardinals. But he started the third quarter and ran for two TDs and passed for another to carry the Cubs to a 23-10 comeback victory.

ALPHA

Paraclete and Kilpatrick - who play for the Alpha League title Friday at Antelope Valley College - are accustomed to meeting one another with a lot on the line. The Spirits have beaten the Mustangs in the last two Southern Section Division XII championship games.

``They have an offense where they just like to punish us,'' Paraclete running back Curtis Brown said of Kilpatrick's basic, but effective, double wing. ``We're not going to let them get to us. We're going to keep on working hard.'' . . .

L.A. Baptist's nonleague game against Brentwood has been moved to 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Alemany High.

THE ENGIL

We award Engils each week to players who would make hard-nosed Sylmar coach Jeff Engilman proud.

FOUR ENGILS

MATT WARE

Loyola QB

Suffering from a knee injury, Loyola's prized quarterback wasn't supposed to play Saturday. But when the Cubs fell behind 10-3 at halftime to Bishop Amat, Ware implored coach Steve Grady to let him in the game.

``He talked to me, he talked to our trainer and he talked to our doctor and told all of us he wanted to play,'' Grady said.

You can't keep a good man down. Ware ran for two long touchdowns, passed 68 yards for another, and Loyola won 23-10.

THREE ENGILS

JAMES NORRIS

Kennedy WR

He is just 5-foot-6, 148 pounds, but no one makes bigger plays. He had three receptions for 165 yards, including touchdowns of 80 and 75 yards, in Friday's 42-7 victory over Reseda. ``James Norris is beyond good,'' coach Bob Francola said. ``On one of the touchdowns he caught a short slant, four guys had him wrapped, he wiggled away, then broke two more tackles.''

TWO ENGILS

MATTHEW MILTON

St. Francis RB

Milton carried 13 consecutive times to start the second half against Notre Dame. The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder eventually finished with 147 yards on 33 carries - against the region's No. 1 defense - but St. Francis lost 13-7.
