The district attorney refused. ``Had I known this was going to be a political contest, it would have been a different situation. I would have brought some campaign literature,'' Garcetti said. The district attorney told the crowd the meeting was not a campaign event but a public service appearance. Trying to quiet requests from Cooley and Groveman, Garcetti said, ``Homeowners only, please.'' Cooley, a longtime long·time adj. At the time, Bill Carrick, his re-election campaign manager, said there wasn't ``much useful purpose'' for Garcetti to attend debates where he'd likely serve as a ``punching bag'' for his opponents.
