Head Deputy District Attorney Steve Cooley Stephen Lawrence ("Steve") Cooley (born May 1, 1947 in Los Angeles, California) is a veteran prosecutor who was elected as Los Angeles County's 36th District Attorney on November 7, 2000. He was sworn in for his second term on December 6, 2004.  and environmental lawyer Barry Groveman sat in the front row at the meeting and repeatedly attempted to ask Garcetti questions. The district attorney refused.

``Had I known this was going to be a political contest, it would have been a different situation. I would have brought some campaign literature,'' Garcetti said.

The district attorney told the crowd the meeting was not a campaign event but a public service appearance.

Trying to quiet requests from Cooley and Groveman, Garcetti said, ``Homeowners only, please.''

Groveman vowed to continue to follow Garcetti from stop to stop until he faced questions or agreed to debate.

``He can't hide forever,'' Groveman said.

Earlier this month, Garcetti rejected debate challenges from both Cooley and Groveman. At the time, Bill Carrick, his re-election campaign manager, said there wasn't ``much useful purpose'' for Garcetti to attend debates where he'd likely serve as a ``punching bag'' for his opponents.

Cooley and Groveman both contended Garcetti is scared to defend his record before the March primary.
