It took him a while, but Fernando Vargas Fernando Vargas (born December 7, 1977 in Oxnard, California) is an American boxer and two-time world champion, who won a bronze medal as an amateur at the 1995 Pan American Games in Mar del Plata. His nicknames include "Ferocious" and "The Aztec Warrior".  congratulated Oscar De La Hoya Oscar de la Hoya (IPA pronunciation: [ˈɑs.kɛɹ dɛ.lɑ.ˈhɔɪ.jɑ][1]) (born February 4, 1973) — nicknamed the Golden Boy  face to face.

Vargas, badly hurt, was whisked from the ring by doctors before he had a chance to shake De La Hoya's hand, Vargas said.

Last week, Vargas saw an opportunity to do the right thing. He heard De La Hoya say during a radio interview he wanted to meet his rival for dinner to clear the air, and Vargas took him up on it.

They met Monday at a restaurant in Pasadena, where they shook hands and apparently settled their differences.

``I wanted to tell Oscar how much I respect his victory in the ring and his subsequent attitude outside the ring,'' Vargas said in a prepared statement.

De La Hoya was satisfied he and Vargas have moved beyond the nasty public exchanges that have marked their relationship until now.

Of course, there was more to the meeting than new-found affection. This was also about money.

The fighters made a fortune for their first meeting and wanted to explore the possibility of another big-money fight in the near future.

It probably won't happen immediately. Vargas faces possible suspension after testing positive for steroids after the Sept. 14 fight and must regroup re·group

after the one-sided loss. De La Hoya has said he wants rematches with Felix Trinidad and Shane Mosley, the only fighters to beat him.

However, De La Hoya and Vargas know a second fight - perhaps within two years - could benefit both of them.

``They're both businessmen; they're not stupid,'' said Rolando Arellano, Vargas' manager. ``They can make a lot of money with each other. Oscar can't make the money with someone else that he can make with Fernando. And Fernando has no one at this time - or in the future, it seems - who he can make more money with than Oscar.''

Arellano said Vargas also took advantage of the opportunity to explain the positive steroid test. Vargas has not disputed the findings but said he didn't knowingly take steroids.

A hearing to determine his punishment is set for Wednesday in Las Vegas.
