Harvick and Green were expected to battle for the Busch Series championship this year, but an unexpected twist of fate landed the two in Winston Cup.

Dale Earnhardt's death in February's Daytona 500 forced Harvick into the Winston Cup ranks. The Bakersfield driver and former Winston West champion was promoted from the Busch Series and took over Earnhardt's team.

But before the season started, Childress had plans to move up Harvick for seven Cup races, starting with the Cracker Barrel 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway Atlanta Motor Speedway (formerly Atlanta International Raceway) is a superspeedway in Hampton, Georgia, twenty miles (32 km) south of Atlanta. It is a 1.54-mile (2.48 km) quad-oval track with a seating capacity of over 125,000. It opened in 1960 as a 1.5 mile standard oval.  in March. Harvick ended up winning that race in Earnhardt's car.

With Harvick running Earnhardt's car and Childress needing a driver to fill the seat of his new team, Green was called, even though the Busch Series champ had said he didn't want to race at the Cup level.

``The right owner called me,'' said Green, who will run a limited Cup schedule and focus on his Busch team. ``Richard gave me a great opportunity. And it's only seven races. It's not going to take away from my Busch Series races.''

Green and Harvick make an unlikely team. Neither could be confused for friends after battling on the Busch Series over all of last year and the first part of this year.

But as Winston Cup teammates, both say they are ready to put their differences aside and cooperate.

``It's not going to hurt us at all,'' said Harvick, who leads Winston Cup rookies in points and leads the Busch Series championship standings. ``If anything, it's going to help. It can be a huge benefit if we let it be a benefit.

``He's a lot like me. He's very competitive. I gained a lot of respect for Jeff Green. Things have changed a lot. We get along good as teammates.''

Green, who is third in points on the Busch Series, said he is happy with his arrangement with Childress Racing.

``We're all professionals and we will do our best as possible for each team,'' Green said. ``My deal is a little different. I can't take anything away from the Busch team. I have to give 150 percent and not worry about the Cup team so much.''

Defending series champion Bobby Labonte will start from the pole today, with defending race winner Jeremy Mayfield third. Jeff Gordon, who has won two of the four Winston Cup events at this track, starts 17th.
