RIVAL FANS COMPETE; AND THIS TIME, IT'S FOR BLOOD.

Byline: Jennifer Hamm Staff Writer

The cross-town rivalry between Trojans and Bruins is always fierce.

But this year, the competition is getting bloody.

The first-ever Big Game Blood Drive has scores of fans trying to outdo their rivals by donating blood and platelets on behalf of their team. Donors chalk up one point when they donate blood and three points when they give platelets.

``I've had people come in and say, `I'm so scared but I'll be damned if I'm going to let the other team win,' '' said Tim Smith Tim Smith is a common name. Notable people with the name Tim Smith include:
  • Tim Smith (rugby league) (born 1985), Australian rugby league player
  • Tim Smith (American football) (born 1957), former NFL wide receiver
, who recruits blood donors at the Ralph M. Parsons Blood Donor Center in Burbank.

The campaign will continue until Nov. 20, when the football teams meet on the field.

The winner of the drive will be announced during halftime.

The ``Beat SC'' mantra has inspired Bruin fans to the early lead, with the Westside school ahead by more than 60 points.

``It's fun to have these things,'' said Arnold, 57. ``It brings some awareness'' to the need for blood.

Los Angeles-area residents donate blood at the lowest level in the country, Smith said. That, coupled with a traditional shortage during the holiday season, made the idea for a fall blood drive attractive.

The 16 hospitals that make up the Southern California Hospital Recruitment Alliance pooled resources and decided to capitalize on the rivalry to increase donations.

``We've had a lot of new faces across the 16 hospitals,'' Smith said.

``They see the sign (outside the center) and say, `I'm a big fan. I haven't donated in a while. Maybe I should,' '' Pollack said.

It is rated as one of the top three hospitals in the United States and is the top hospital on the West Coast according to US News & World Report. , new donors have been stopping by to win points for their team and donate blood or platelets.

The UCLA Blood & Platelet Center is expected to collect an additional 1,000 units before the big game, said Linda Goss, community liaison for the center.

Fun for fans, however, isn't the primary concern.

``We just want people to donate,'' said Goss. ``The patients are the ones who really win.''
