RIORDAN SLATE NEAR $2 MILLION; MAYOR-BACKED CANDIDATES CAMPAIGN ARDENTLY.

With the city elections less than two weeks away, Mayor Richard Riordan Richard J. Riordan (born May 1, 1930) is a Republican politician from California, U.S. who served as the California Secretary of Education from 2003–2005 and as Mayor of Los Angeles from 1993–2001. Riordan ran for Governor of California unsuccessfully in 2002.  reported on Thursday he had almost reached his goal of raising $2 million for school board races as incumbent members scrambled to match him.

Riordan's Coalition for Kids political action committee reported raising more than $1.9 million to help the April 13 campaigns of school board member David Tokofsky and challengers Caprice ca·price

    Michael Thomas Lansing (born April 3, 1968 in Rawlins, Wyoming) is a former Major League Baseball infielder who played for the Montreal Expos, Colorado Rockies, and the Boston Red Sox between 1993 and 2001.
    . Young and Lansing have begun an aggressive television advertising campaign, which Hayes is expected to join soon.

    Incumbents Jeff Horton Jeff Horton, born (date?) in Arlington, Texas, is currently an assistant coach (Special Assistant/Offense) for the St. Louis Rams of the National Football League. He has also been active as an assistant coach at the collegiate level (Minnesota, Nevada, UNLV, Wisconsin) and as a , Barbara Boudreaux and George Kiriyama, however, continued to raise funds in the tightly fought races to try to hold on to their posts.

    The Riordan money was being used for television advertisements and other efforts to reach voters.

    Lansing has been particularly aggressive with his campaign, spending all but $10,000 of the $461,000 he has raised in his Harbor-area race against Kiriyama. Kiriyama's report was not available. Previously he had reported raising $136,000 and spending $37,000.

    Young was second in spending, with better than $420,000 of the $438,000 she has raised going into the campaign against Horton for the seat that generally encompasses the Hollywood area. Horton reported spending about $30,000 of the $96,000 he has raised.

    Hayes, who is challenging Boudreaux in the South Los Angeles South Los Angeles is the official name for a large geographic and cultural area lying to the southwest and southeast of downtown Los Angeles, California. The area was formerly called South Central Los Angeles, and is still sometimes called South Central.  area, has spent more than $200,000 in the race. Boudreaux reported raising $63,500 over the past month and spending more than $54,000 in her bid for re-election.

    Most of the money received came in the form of in-kind contributions from Riordan, with $400,000 to Lansing, $378,000 to Young and $93,000 to Hayes. Nearly all of the money went into the advertising campaign.

    In City Council races, incumbents held a wide edge.

    In the 2nd Council District, Councilman Joel Wachs Joel Wachs served for several terms as Los Angeles City Councilman for the 2nd district. He was first elected by defeating incumbent James B. Potter.

    While in office, Wachs chaired the Public Works Committee and vice-chair of the Environmental Quality & Waste Management
     reported total contributions of $192,000. Only one opponent, John Spishak, reported raising any money. Spishak has received $6,113.

    In the 4th Council District, Council President John Ferraro John Ferraro (May 14 1924—April 17 2001) served as a Los Angeles City Councilman from 1966 until his death. Early life
    Ferraro was born in the working class suburb of Cudahy, California, just south of Los Angeles.
     reported a total of $190,000. The report from his opponent Benjamin Lucas was not available.

    Councilwoman Ruth Galanter's latest report was not available, nor were those of her three opponents. Previously, she reported raising $144,000. Her challengers had not reported any funds raised at that point.

    In the 8th District, Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas Mark Ridley-Thomas (born 1954) is currently a California State Senate where he chairs the Business, Professions and Economic Development Committee]]. He represents the 26th district which includes the communities of Vermont Knolls, Jefferson Park, Leimert Park, Hancock Park, Korean  has raised more than $180,000. Challenger Sandra Farrington-Domingue's last report showed her at $29,400, with Delaney E. Smith at $14,500 and John Caldwell at $10,000.

    In the 10th District, Councilman Nate Holden has raised $273,000, with opponent Madison T. Shockley reporting more than $118,000; Scott Suh at $94,000 and Marsha Brown at $25,000.

    In the 12th District, Councilman Hal Bernson also held a wide lead, having raised more than $161,000. The closest of his challengers was Howard Nussbaum, with $2,800; Charles Rubel ru·bel

    In the crowded race for the 14th District seat being vacated by Councilman Richard Alatorre, Victor Griego reported the most at better than $189,000, followed by Nick Pacheco at $167,000, Alvin Parra at $63,000, Juan Guitierrez at $55,700 and the rest of the field trailing.

    In a related development, the City Clerk's Office certified a number of write-in candidates.

    They include grocery clerk Alfredo Urrutia Jr. and teacher and outreach worker Connie Acebo Rodriguez in the crowded 7th District race; physician and Bible instructor Delaney Smith in the 8th District; and Yolanda Gonzales, a state senator's representative, in the 14th District race.

    Also, child development specialist Violet Dewitt Staley is a write-in candidate for the Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population.  Board of Education's 5th District seat held by Boudreaux.

    Andrew Kim, a county commissioner, is a write-in for Office No. 7 on the board of the Los Angeles Community College District The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) is the community college district serving Los Angeles, California and some of its neighboring cities. In addition to typical college aged students, the LACCD also serves adults of all ages. .
