RIORDAN AIDE CONSIDERS RACE FOR BRAUDE'S SEAT.

Byline: Patrick McGreevy Daily News Staff Writer

Cecilia Aguilera Glassman, a top aide to Mayor Richard Riordan Richard J. Riordan (born May 1, 1930) is a Republican politician from California, U.S. who served as the California Secretary of Education from 2003–2005 and as Mayor of Los Angeles from 1993–2001. Riordan ran for Governor of California unsuccessfully in 2002. , said Wednesday she is exploring a possible candidacy for the 11th District City Council seat being vacated by the retirement of council veteran Marvin Braude Marvin Braude (August 11, 1920—December 7, 2005)served as Los Angeles City Councilman for the 11th district from 1965 to 1997. At various times Mr. Braude (pronounced BROW-dee) served as chair of the Finance and Revenue Committee, the Environmental Quality and Waste .

A candidacy by Glassman in the April 1997 election would add more heat to an already hotly contested race to succeed Braude, who announced Oct. 10 that he is not running for re-election after 32 years in office.

``I think she would add significant interest and focus to the race,'' said Richard Close, president of the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association.

The council district extends from West Los Angeles
  • West Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California, a neighborhood of Los Angeles
  • West Los Angeles (region), a popularly identified region of Los Angeles, incorporating the neighborhood above
to parts of Sherman Oaks, Van Nuys, Tarzana and Encino.

``I'm exploring the issue at this time,'' said Glassman, a Sherman Oaks resident who is Riordan's director of community services and formerly served as his liaison to the Sherman Oaks area.

Previously announced as candidates are Brentwood resident Cindy Miscikowski Cindy Miscikowski represented the 11th District on the Los Angeles City Council for two full terms from 1997 through 2005. Previously, she was an aide to Councilman Marvin Braude and the Executive Director of the Skitball Cultural Center in its beginning stages. , who was Braude's former chief of staff, and Tarzana resident Georgia Mercer, who is Mayor Riordan's former liaison to the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Aguilera, whose husband, Jeff Glassman Jeff Glassman is a noted playwright, actor, and composer of movement from Urbana, Illinois. He pioneered several different ways of notating movement. This includes a way of notating movements in time and in space, involving a three-dimensional composition. , is a former law partner of Riordan's and one of his top fund-raisers, declined to elaborate on her plans.

But political experts who had heard that Glassman has been exploring a candidacy said her impact on the race would depend largely on how deeply Mayor Riordan is involved.

``It depends on what the mayor does in terms of support and financial support,'' said Steve Afriat, a political consultant for Braude. ``I think right now, Cindy Miscikowski is difficult to take out of first place.''

Afriat said Glassman and Mercer may split the vote of people who support the mayor.

Miscikowski was out of town and unavailable for comment, but her political consultant, Rick Taylor Rick Taylor(リック・テイラー Rikku Teirā) is a fictional character, acting as the protagonist of the Splatterhouse series of video games by Namco. , said he does not expect the mayor will endorse either Mercer or Glassman and the result will be that they will split the vote of the mayor's supporters.

``I think it harms both of them,'' Taylor said of the two candidacies.

Some observers noted Riordan largely has been unsuccessful in getting the City Council to approve his agenda and may be looking to get one of his own people elected to the 11th District seat to improve his success with the council.
