RIORDAN'S NUMBER COMES UP: FOR JURY SERVICE.

Riordan (born May 1, 1930) is a Republican politician from California, U.S. who served as the California Secretary of Education from 2003–2005 and as Mayor of Los Angeles from 1993–2001. Riordan ran for Governor of California unsuccessfully in 2002. , who collects $1 a year in city salary, will earn five times that much a day starting Monday, when he reports to the downtown Criminal Courts Building for jury duty.

The mayor said he's ready to serve if chosen or to read a lot if not.

And that $5 a day in payment for jury service? Like all city employees, the mayor must turn the money over to the city treasury. (City workers earn their salaries while on jury duty, with the jury money going to the city coffers.)
