RIMMING WITH EXCITEMENT FOG, RAIN COULD MAKE AUTO RACE `MORE INTERESTING'.

Byline: Greg Botonis Staff Writer

PALMDALE - Rally drivers from around the world are racing along fire roads in the Angeles National Forest The Angeles National Forest (ANF) was established by executive order on December 20, 1892 as the San Gabriel Timberland Reserve. It covers over 2,600 km² (650,000 acres) and is located in the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles County, just north of the metropolitan area of Los  this weekend between Palmdale and Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  in the annual Rim of the World ProRally.

Organizers say this year's race should be more interesting than in the past because of the weather.

``We're expecting rain and a little fog, which will make it a bit more interesting,'' said event organizer Paula Gibeault.

The event's 20th running kicked off Friday night from Pelona Vista Park at the corner of Rayburn Avenue and Tierra Subida Road and will continue through today with an awards breakfast at 8 a.m. Sunday at the Palmdale Holiday Inn.

This year's race is highlighted by the intense competition between Mitsubishi and Subaru factory teams.

``Mitsubishi and Subaru are just in a death battle,'' Gibeault said. ``They are determined to beat each other. I have never seen that kind of determination.''

Among the drivers are Doug Shepherd, a Chrysler engineer from Detroit, who has been racing in rallies since 1973, when he was 18. He now races a 250-horsepower, front-wheel-drive Dodge SR24 compact for Mopar Performance Parts.

``I like the rush of adrenaline adrenaline (ədrĕn`əlĭn, –lēn): see epinephrine.  that you get racing through unknown roads, trying to slow down in time for corners, there's nothing like it'' Shepherd said. ``This is the way I relax, to do something stressful.''

Shepherd won last year's Rim of the World Rally in his class.

The race was to kick off just after 7 p.m. Friday and finish its first day after midnight.
