RIKEN Elucidates Reaction Mechanism of Indoleamine 2,3-Dioxygenase.

Any of various indole derivatives, such as serotonin, containing a primary, secondary, or tertiary amine group.
 2, 3-dioxygenase. Discovered by Japanese scientist Osamu Hayaishi in 1956, indoleamine 2, 3-dioxygenase is a kind of oxygenase oxygenase /ox·y·gen·ase/ (-jen-as) any oxidoreductase that catalyzes the incorporation of both atoms of molecular oxygen into a single substrate.

. In the human body, indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase degrades tryptophan tryptophan (trĭp`təfăn), organic compound, one of the 20 amino acids commonly found in animal proteins. Only the l-stereoisomer appears in mammalian protein.  and oxygen molecules and converts them into various substances such as vitamin B.

In its recent research, RIKEN analyzed the structure of indoleamine 2, 3-dioxygenase and elucidated that the oxygenase has a structure resembling a cow head. Further, tryptophan reacts directly with oxygen on a concave surface of the oxygenase structure.

RIKEN expects that these findings will contribute to research on various diseases including cancer, age-related cataract, cancer and virus infection, in which the controlling of enzyme activities plays a key role.
