RIKEN, Perlegen Sciences Japan to Collaborate in High-resolution Whole Genome Studies.


Tokyo, Japan, July 22, 2005 - (JCNN JCNN Japan Corporate News Network ) - RIKEN RIKEN Rikagaku Kenkyusho (Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, Japan)  and Perlegen Sciences Japan jointly announced on July 21 that the two parties have entered into a collaborative agreement to conduct high-resolution, whole genome association studies with the aim of collaborating to search genetic origins of various diseases.

Specifically, RIKEN's SNP Research Center and Perlegen Sciences Japan will analyze genetic variations of DNA DNA: see nucleic acid.
DNA
 or deoxyribonucleic acid

One of two types of nucleic acid (the other is RNA); a complex organic compound found in all living cells and many viruses. It is the chemical substance of genes.
 samples collected at 66 hospitals across Japan.

Diseases to be studied will include atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, epilepsy, heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

, asthma, arrhythmia, cerebral infarction and various cancers.

The two entities expect that the collaboration will lead to the development of innovative drugs that target the root causes of disease.
